soobiefreak85
I just bought these on Ebay...do I need to return them? They are new and said they would fit EA81, EA82, and EA82T...1980-1989. I have a EA81 1987 Standard. It is a little shorter and the notch is wider? Should I return it, or will it work just fine? Thoughts?
Quidam
I just bought these on Ebay...do I need to return them? They are new and said they would fit EA81, EA82, and EA82T...1980-1989. I have a EA81 1987 Standard. It is a little shorter and the notch is wider? Should I return it, or will it work just fine? Thoughts? Yea, long day but here's mine. The left one may be EA 81 exhaust, they have a thicker stem than the EA 82 valve. Doug Edited June 24, 2012 by Quidam
soobiefreak85
The one on the left is original exhaust. The one on the right is the one ordered, it is an exhaust as well. Just concerned about the slight height difference and notch difference.
Quidam
Yea, those are the wrong valves for your motor and won't fit.

soobiefreak85
It seems I have been getting a lot of parts wrong on this car. I got a 87 hatchback standard, ea81. Even the parts store has been giving me the wrong parts, such as the distributor cab for example, among others. I am sure the motor hasn't been pulled and changed out. Is this common? a2labs
Yeah it's common in my experience, I get wrong and bad parts so often that it's a running joke whenever I go to fix someone's car... They ask how long it will take and I say "depends on how many trips it takes to get the right part" My recent experience has been better with remans that with new parts. Changing an axle in my '85 wagon a few months ago, went thru three axles before I found one that didn't click. Send em back quick before it's too late. By the way, why are you buying new valves? Just curious. Good luck!
soobiefreak85
Rebuilding the motor, I figured might as well throw some new valves in there along with all the other parts (i.e. bearings, rings, pistons) Am I wasting my money? Just wire brush them and they are good to go?
Crazyeights
There are at least (2) types of EA81 valves I am aware of. I just went through this with the EA81's I recently rebuild. I don't remember the specifics but EA81 Hydro, Solid, and EA81T may all have different lengths and or clip locations.
a2labs
Nah soobiefreak, I don't think you're wasting your money, I was just curious if you broke or bent a valve and that's why you were replacing them. Having said that, if there's nothing wrong with the valves and the guides aren't wearing abnormally, and if you aren't going for some crazy 700hp supercharged turbo build, you can probably get away with cleaning them and reusing them. Might get a micrometer on them to make sure they're within spec still. Good luck!
ivans imports
valves change in 83 the differance is whether has extra two bolts on lower part of head 10 mm s if has bolts ealy if no bolts late the late one has bigger valves posibly longer to
987687
You're getting the wrong parts because in 85 they changed over to the ea82 in all cars except the brat and the two door hatch. So if you're asking for 87 GL parts chances are you'll get the wrong ones. Even 87 brat is listed as having an ea82 in some stores. Best bet is to ask for 84 parts, you'll have a higher chance of getting the right thing. I have an 89 GL, but with an ea81 swapped in. So I've been through getting the wrong engine parts unless I ask for older engines.
