Turbone
What do you want to know? Theres year models of WRX's that have glass transmissions. In later years the WRX went to a 2.5. Most STi's have been modded and you really need to know what your looking at mechanically when you buy one, or know the previous owner. Your best bet is to find a stock 02-03 WRX owned by a adult. Miles arent that major, but good maintenance is.
1 Lucky Texan
yeah, the problem with inexpensive sports cars is who gets them and how do they drive and maintain their vehicles. That said, I bought my 06 WRX wagon in my 50s ! if you're looking for a project car, I guess almost any of them would be OK. Personally, 06-07 WRX would be decent. Some folks really don't like the samurai face, pignose, flying va-jay-jay look of the front but, mechanically they're awesome stock and have lots of potential for upgrades. yes. I'm biased. jarl
If you really want info about those specific cars you may want to check nasioc. That being said, the idea of buying a pre-abused WRX/STi is kind of scary, unless you get it for a very good price and you understand you'll be fixing all the previous owner's screwups... 1 Lucky Texan
I guess it isn't clear if the OP is buying new or used. might wanna check insurance rates between the 2 before you decide on an STI for a 21 year-old male.

Durania
I have an 05 STi and have had many other Subarus as well. The key to getting one used is confirming what life it had before you go to look at it. Luckily, I got mine from a guy who had it since 2005 and he also worked at Lockheed-Martin as an engineer. Took super good care of it and had plenty of records of maintenance. The main thing is he didn't call me "bro" on the phone. People do mod these things, that's a given. You just have to look at what mods the person has on them. I passed on several that had some obnoxious vent to atmosphere blow off valve. Here are some links with info for you http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=533787 http://www.iwsti.com/forums/faq-newbie-forum/24548-newbie-threads-interest.html
GeneralDisorder
They are great cars if you don't get one that's been abused by a kid. Most of the one's for sale have been, and you can just assume that any you see on a used car dealers lot have been abused much more than the average example. Don't even bother buying one from a dealer. My shop is on an "auto mall" strip and I have the opportunity to see what they sell on a daily basis. A 20-something kid from down the street comes by my shop needing help with an '04 WRX he bought with a rod knock. Says he owns the dealership :-p. Anyway I torched off a rounded exhaust nut for him and he shows me the short block he's putting in it.... it's sitting on a tire with no oil pan or heads on it in a filthy hole of a shop. The cylinder walls are washed out clean and smooth. I tell him it will be an oil burner at the very least. That car is for sale right now on his lot for $9k. He put it together himself with the worst selection of tools I've seen in a while and in a nasty, dirty shop. Whoever buys that will be lucky to see another 10k on that engine. That's just one story - I have many more. GD
htptwater
Thanks to all of you! It is kind of hard to figure out which way to go so far as getting a used or new one. So far as the used ones ive seen online they have lots of mods, but they are around 2002-2005 and people want like 13,000 for them. That is just way too much for a car that is 10 years old and doesnt hold value that well. I kind of want a new one but im trying to get the deal i want on it and not get screwed over. ShawnW
You just contradicted yourself there. You just said, too much money for a car that doesn't hold its value well. Seems to me they are holding up well and are in demand, especially one that is in the condition you are seeking. You may want to consider building a car that meets the specs instead. Its commonly done and you get to insure the car as a straight boring Impreza instead of the expensive car that came that way.
