Uberoo
I have a 91 ej22 in my ea81 offroader. It has 150K miles on it and it WAS running beautifully. I went offroading yesterday and that all changed.Right now it will idle perfectly but it wont rev.If I try to rev it, it just bogs and misses to oblivion. The timing is dead on,all of the spark plugs are firing ,same with the fuel injectors. If I unplug a spark plug wire or injector connector the engine runs even worse so all good there.I didn't see any vacuum leaks and I am pretty sure the engine didn't suck water.I have a snorkel and it is dry as a bone in there.I cleaned and dried every connector I could find on the engine and still no change.same with grounds.O2 sensor is hooked up. any idea whats up?all this happened after I hit a water hole a bit fast and made water splash everywhere.Yesterday when it first happened I noticed that I could pull the connector for #2 injector with no change, while at the same time it seemed as though everything was intermittently working again.Sometimes it had full power and would rev like it was supposed to then a minute later it would bog and misfire itself to almost stalling. please help I need this up and running by tomorrow for a local mud bog. wtdash
That one injector being unplugged and not changing anything is likely one good symptom....but can't help w/exact issue. Could be it's still drying out. Can you read CELs from the EJ22 ECU? Pull the codes? Until it all dries out, I think you're going to have issues. Besides the snorkel, do you have a full coverage skidplate or other means to prevent water/mud splashing from underneath? It sounds like fun, but water fording/mud bogging are going to get water/mud where 'they ain't 'sposed 2B' unless you've taken extra precautions. I drive a street-only Forester and have water/mud splater on the engine w/one missing little cover.....can't imagine how it'd be w/actually going off-road. GL and have fun tomorrow, TD Edited July 13, 2012 by wtdash

WoodsWagon
I'd be suspicious of the fuel pump or a kinked inlet line to the pump from the tank. If it doesn't have good fuel pressure, all it will do is idle. The second thought is the coilpack. Listen for snapping noises around it when you try to rev the engine. Water makes it much easier for spark to jump out of bad insulation under load. You can also spray it with a mister bottle of water. You should have dielectric grease slathered around the terminals where the spark plug wires attach to the coil pack and under the boots to seal it up from water. Fairtax4me
Might have cooked the driver circuit in the ECU. Swap it with number 4 to see if it's the injector or wiring. Or check it with a noid light. There could also be water in the main harness connector. Pull that apart and spray it with electronics cleaner/ contact oil. Fuel injector removal is easier said than done. You'll want to spray the rails out with compressed air first or else the intake will get about a half cup of gas poured into it when the injectors are pulled out of the rail. Remove the 2 screws on the injector cover, then pull the cover off, don't lose the small rubber insulators. The injector can then be pried out of the rail. I've used a small flat head screwdriver stuck in the small holes on the side to pry the injector out. Once it's popped up a bit it can be twisted/pulled out by hand. WoodsWagon
It will still rev fine with a dead injector. I've driven thousands of miles on 3cyl ej22's. When you think about it, an EJ22 on 3cyls is the same as an ea82 on all 4. If it won't rev up, you have a bigger problem than just the injectors. Uberoo
turns out the fuel pump was dieing.it wasn't supplying enough pressure to feed all the injectors at anything above idle.So I swapped in a in line fuel pump off a ford F150 because it was only $80.Then my return line blew off as I was staging and I ran outta gas just as I was about to run.5 gallons got me about 30 feet...when I went to go home I put 5 bucks in and that was enough to keep it running but not enough to completely submerge the pickup so I idled the couple miles home in the highest gear it would push the car..
