viensal
Hi, I need help, I just finished the overhaul of a EA82 when I realize something was wrong. Since the engine is now installed on a VW Bus with a Kennedy adaptor I dont have flywheel timing reference anymore. So did someone have a idea how I could find the appropriate crank position, could I refer to Keyway on front pulley, or with top dead center ? I could I be sure to not be 180 deg off ? Thanks for help Alex
djellum
you can find top dead center by either pulling the valve cover and watching for the #1 intake valve to open and close (once it closes the piston is on its way up to top dead), or plugging the spark plug hole with your finger and feeling for compression. in other cars a skinny screwdriver through the hole will let you feel for the highest point the piston reaches while you turn the crank. won't be actual top dead center but it will be close. The FNG
I think if you set your drivers side timing belt so the pulley is up, then rotate the crank 180 until your pass side pulley is up and the drivers is down, then you rotate the crank until the passenger side pulley is at about ten o'clock. That should put you at TDC with the disty pointing at the #1 cylinder. This is assuming you have already set your timing belts. Assuming it is an SPFI engine, ignition timing should be set at 20* BTDC.
viensal
Hi In fact that is my problem, the timing belts are off so I cant time the cams vs the crank.
Quidam
Hi, I'm uploading a picture for you to photobucket, it will explain everything about getting your motor in time. Be right back. Bring the number 1 cylinder up on the compression stroke with your finger in the spark plug hole. Use something to feel when the piston is at tdc, rock it back and forth with the crank pulley/nut. When you're satisfied it's at top dead center on compression stroke, put the belts on it with the pulleys in the positions shown below. It's in time at this point and drop the distributor in and line it up with number one on the cap. If you have any questions, just ask. hth Doug FYI, if you "lock" the harmonic balancer in with pins you can then mark your balancer at tdc for future reference with a fabricated pointer. Some XT's came this way from the factory. You could put degree marks on the balancer for timing advance purposes as well. I drilled an extra pin hole in this balancer 180 degrees from the original. This balancer is junk and I'm not using it, but this is how that looks. Edited July 18, 2012 by Quidam
