Hi, 95 Legacy 5 speed. Last week after getting gas I turned the key and I heard from the steering column a electric screeching sound, not real loud. Didn't start, turn key back then fired it right up. Few details then a few questions. The key is a copy, ignition is original key matches door. Clutch safty switch working fine. Original key could be a copy, looking at it now, all metal no plastic top. So has anyone ever squirted that real fine graphite powder in theres? Did it work? Can you change ingition without removing wheel? Yes its got an airbag. No rush just thinking of the furture, THANK YOU.

That's the starter interlock relay in the dash buzzing because the clutch safety switch is making poor contact. The clutch safety switch grounds the pull coil of the relay. Has nothing to do with the key. Be kind to your lock cylinder because the cylinder is only a lock and has no electric components. None at all.

The lock turns a rod that operates the ignition switch, which is on the other side of the steering column.

There's nothing wrong with the ignition switch.

There are two cures for this. One is to either replace or bypass the clutch safety switch, which seems to be the primary contributor to the problem. The second is to replace the relay, which does not often go bad.

Most of the time, you just need to push a little harder on the clutch pedal during starting.

Thanks Fairtax, you've been a great help!! Yeh seems like it was a one time fluke thing, floor mat got in the way maybe. I have had numerous times, when I didn't push the petal far enough. I'm looking in my haynes manuel now, seems simple enough, if needs be which I'm not going to worry about now, worst case I bypass it, THANKS AGAIN!!!:headbang:
