RX rear struts and rock auto

Recommended Posts

Good Lord, I have been reading strut specs for hours trying to cross reference rear struts*for the RX. I ordered two off Rock several days back, they sent me an email saying they had made a mistake and had no equivalent in stock - and (they) cancelled my order. I guess I'm just supposed to shag off and make my own out of wheat?

Anyway, I can't find the dimensions for the Monroe LE30222 since it's out of production. I did find the Gabriel G53182 listed as an equivalent to the LE30222 on one website. Several hours ago I had thought the Monroe 71222 might be a match but couldn't be 100% certain.

Then I read Loyale 2.7's article on the the KYB Excel G 541232 only to find the Excel G has been superseded by the GR/2 and also the only Excel G I could find were $105 each, from EUROPE, lol. :banghead:

I know this has come up before, what did other RX people do?

By the way, a lot of websites do not mention the RX in their pulldowns, but the do have the 1990 Loyale RS, or a listing for the '4wd coupe' under Loyale... those cars use the same parts, so sometimes I got information looking that up, then tried to cross reference it to something else.

Amazon shows a KYB 341065 'might' be the right one

Have you tried the KYB website? maybe they have a fitment chart.

Also, don't worry about the name change for the struts, GR2 is the same as Excel-G. at least , that's what everyone including KYB says.

If you KNOW a manufcaturer's number that works, you can do a cross reference at KYB. for instance, the Monroe Sensa-trac 71268 crosses to the KYB 341065.

but I don't know what car you have and really know zero about RXes.

I ordered the Gabriel shocks. I'll just have to open one and compare them really really carefully to the existing shocks and see how they match. If they don't I will cross match the kyb Excel G '98 4runner fronts to a kyb gr/2 equivalent

Loyale2.7's article on the accord springs with the toyota 4runner front shocks blows my mind. I am always amazed the connections people make and the 'what ifs' that get explored. never mind crazy guys with mid mounted 6cyls in a coupe!

I can get KYB 341065's which are for a 3dr sedan RX 4wd for $70.20 ea. In stock at my local warehouse. Shipping these isn't expensive with Fedex Ground should be less than $20 for both boxes.

Excel Gs are superseding GR2s. The only difference is black paint instead of silver and a different sticker, and they have the same part numbers. Which means parts dealers have no way to order one or the other. In fact it's not uncommon to get some of each. My Celica has 3 Excel-Gs and one GR2.

IIRC, any 4WD EA82 should use the same rear shock. Only difference I can think of would be the internal valving. I don't think they'd bother having different valving for the different body styles just for a stock replacement, but if it does, grab the wagon ones, as those have the stiffest springs (most weight).

what are you using for the KYB part # for the fronts because KYB's website only lists 2wd front struts.

The ones I listed above are GR2's, the last 2 available from my supplier, then it has another line item if I need more. Items that I used to be able to get as KYB are now available in a Sachs brand product, I haven't had any complaints on the ones I installed a week ago to a Loyale.

MONROE Part # 71877 OESpectrum Strut

Front Left; 4WD

MONROE Part # 71876 OESpectrum Strut

Front Right; 4WD

(from Rock Auto), Pep Boys had them listed too with better information

Don't buy anything on my word though, check it out for yourself till your satisfied.

  • 2 weeks later...

And Monroe was wrong. I took Monroe 71223 off the RX. The Gabriel I got was based on the Monroe 30222, which has two subs listed. The one I got has the coil seat about one inch too low.

I'm feeling that except for people on this BBS, no one can tell a 2wd from a 4wd and an AWD Subaru.

I'll RMA my Rock Auto shocks and find the Monroe 71223 locally. Another thing that is pyssing me off is that most of the chain store websites wont allow a part number search, they'll only limit you to whatever car they force you to select.

71222

71223 will both work/fit on the RX. the only difference is like .4 inches of travel.

I've ran both on my lifted 86, never noticed a difference. matter of fact, I think the drivers side is a 222 and the passenger side is a 223 (parts store only had one when I blew a strut on the 4th of July)
