subi dude
so i have an 88 GL-10 in which im replacing the brake pads. i got everything off and have new pads, but i cant get the calipers to compress to get the new pads in. i have the master cylinder cap off to see if it helps when using the C clamp to try compressing them, with no luck. Any other tricks you can recommend me trying?? trying to get this done today, so any fast news really helps. Thanks, subi dude
bratman18
You have to screw the front pistons in.
bratman18
You'll notice there are indentations on the piston. There is a tool for it, but you can just use a pair of pliers, just put the tips in the indentations, and screw them in.
drugh
You have to turn the piston clockwise as you compress it back in. This is part of the front wheel e-brake system. Oreilys sells a little tool for 7 or 8 bucks that makes this very easy. You can also do it carefully with pliers. Turn the piston 90 degrees clockwise, then depress it a little bit, and repeat that sequence until it is flush with the caliper. Be sure to rotate the piston to the same orientation that you found it in...You will notice that the inner pads have little dimples that fit in the piston when it is aligned correctly. Subruise
+1 to these guys. i will add that you should not compress them with anything (c clamp etc) just screw them in with your mc lid off. ps how did that DR5mt work out for ya?

BlindSight
Yeah im sure you figured it out by now but just in case you haven't, go out and get one of these magical cubes... you just figure out which side fits the application then pop in a ratchet and apply preassure while turning
ShawnW
Either way on new questions. If its related to the calipers I would follow up here if its a new topic I would post a new one (or search).
xbeerd
If you dont have any other those tools available, i made a tool to turn it in out of a pipe, i cut some notches out so that there were a couple nubs stickin out to fit the grooves
psylosyfer
Everyone is correct, you screw in the pistons, I have always used a channel lock opened enough to put the pincer tips in the two grooves, then just apply downward pressure while turning CW.
