HELP: Cant compress calipers

Recommended Posts

so i have an 88 GL-10 in which im replacing the brake pads. i got everything off and have new pads, but i cant get the calipers to compress to get the new pads in. i have the master cylinder cap off to see if it helps when using the C clamp to try compressing them, with no luck.

Any other tricks you can recommend me trying??

trying to get this done today, so any fast news really helps.

Thanks, subi dude

You have to turn the piston clockwise as you compress it back in. This is part of the front wheel e-brake system.

Oreilys sells a little tool for 7 or 8 bucks that makes this very easy. You can also do it carefully with pliers. Turn the piston 90 degrees clockwise, then depress it a little bit, and repeat that sequence until it is flush with the caliper.

Be sure to rotate the piston to the same orientation that you found it in...You will notice that the inner pads have little dimples that fit in the piston when it is aligned correctly.

oh yea. trans is working out fine so far. just wish someday i could find one thats decently easy to shift, ya know?

thanks for the advice everyone. picked up the tool, was able to turn one piston easily, the other i spun for an hour and it wouldnt go any further. SO, picked up a new caliper today. yay, another 70 bucks.

p.s. If i need help again, should i just post my questions on this thread or make a new one. dont want to be annoying.
