Tosh
do the splines in the middle of the clutch disk match up? as far as I know thats the major difference between subie clutches.
Subruise
oh ya my bad. splines are identical. checked with clutch tool. the 4 spring came out of one of my cars (loyale probably), and the other disc/pressure plate came with the spare motor i got with the wifes new 88. hmmmmm....... Tosh
yeah, probably just different makes. I know my GL's transmission takes clutch disks from a 01 Ej22 but NOT from the standard ea82 clutch kit.
Subruise
weird. 3.7 gears or something? or did the parts guy think he knew what he was talking about and in reality ( as it so often happens) he did not.
Tosh
naw I got the xt6 clutch kit for my EJ22 swap, that didn't match the splines on the input shaft of the transmission. I picked up the regular GL kit, that didn't fit. I tried the clutch that came on my ej22, it fit just fine so I got a new one for that.
Subruise
ahh ej swap, no wonder. im still driving my dinosaurs around. so, next question; is the one with 6 springs inherently better than one with 4? forgive me, i still havent mastered the physics and internal clutch disc characteristics. i just know how to take em off and put em on. thickness is close enough to call it a push. thanx for the input btw
Fairtax4me
There are lots of variations in the design of clutch disks. The 6 spring one could be a heavy duty version, it could be a light duty version, or it could just be that manufacturers design.
Subruise
ok cool, i think ill throw it in just to see. when i have multiple used items i usually dont buy new, that and $$ sucks these days. also, the springs appear to be the same size on both, it stands to reason that 6 would work 50% better than 4. but, like i said i really dont kno
WoodsWagon
The only different clutch disks were the 2wd ones, they were smaller diameter. Pick whichever disk has the most thickness left to it.
GeneralDisorder
85/86 have a smaller hub with fewer springs than '87+. GD
