89Ru
first time I looked under the valve cover on my '95 EJ22 outback, glad I did. gotta find the torque's on these, anyone know?
Fairtax4me
The bolts on your rocker assemblies are loose. I've had that happen (it was my fault) and the end result is no fun. It's good that you caught this at this stage. Torque spec on those is something like 20ft lbs. Tighten in a cris-cross fashion from the center bolts out. 89Ru
thanks for the torques, found a pic of the tightening order, just like you said, inside to outside. I've read stories of these bolts bouncing around inside the cover. Was a close one for sure. Don't wait 200k like me before diving under the cover. Now onto the other side... 89Ru
had to look up the torques on the eight rocker bolts, everything was super loose. spec is 8.7 + 0.7 ft-lb. http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=20509
Fairtax4me
Only 8.7 ?! You know that does sound about right though. I had posted it in another thread but that was a while ago.
ShawnW
Ive found it a 15 foot pounds every time I looked it up. 8.7 is probably the valve cover bolt torque but I would have to look to be sure.
Fairtax4me
I can open the FSM now (on the home PC) . Torque spec for rocker assembly to head is 8.7 ft lbs. +/- 0.7. Rocker cover bolts 3.6 Ft lbs. +/- 0.7.
ShawnW
Ok, thanks. Will have to remember that.
89Ru
valve cover bolts bottom out at 5 ft-lb so 3.6 sounds right on. thanks for the doublecheck. btw driver's side rocker bolts were all snug. pass side rocker was hanging on by one snug bolt, one bolt only

avk
I replaced valve cover gaskets and grommets on a '95 2.2 l engine with 114,800 miles, and found just one of the rocker bolts to be a little loose. I checked them all with a wrench set at 100 inch*lb (8.33 ft*lb), and the rear, upper bolt on the right-hand side did turn a small amount. By the way, the Fel-Pro set I was using came with blue gaskets (their standard color for "PermaDry" line), and marked "Made in Japan". So now the car has blue JDM valve cover gaskets.
