5-speed swap and trans mounts, am I missing something??

Recommended Posts

When it comes to trans mounts and the crossmember, I thought I read time and time again that you have to fabricate mounts?

I realize that the ea82 mounts are superior, but it seems that the ea81 4-speed mounts work just fine. With the only exception being youd have to drill one more hole for the bracket to match the trans

The drivers side bolts up 100%

Passenger side needs one hole drilled to make things work.

It is my understanding that the whole cross member has to be fabricated for the 5-speed.

Not with a lift.

IIRC, the only reason a custom crossmember would be needed in a non-lifted rig is to drop the trans enough to clear the tunnel.

Idasho this guy did basically the same (OK there was cutting and welding!):

Others have mentioned elongating the holes in the mounts (and the crossmember too) to make them fit. So I would assume it works as you have done...

sorry posted this in your 'rides' thread.

EA81 mounts work fine, you are correct in that

drill another hole and bolt 'em up

i used old ones and filled the gaps with 3m window weld urethane to add some beefiness - you could buy new ones too i guess

i used all the 5 speed shift linkages and interior trim

i had to space the crossmember down about 1/4" to clear the tunnel

no bashing and no lift

had to cut a quarter sized triangle out of the back of the hole in the floor

5 speed is shorter so you either need a custom 1 piece driveline - that what i did or you use a EA82 2 peice and figure out how to mount the carrier bearing

this is the 2nd easiest swap i ahve ever done on any vehicle

(easiest was the rear discs)

let me know if you want to come look at mine and also if you want to get rid of the 4speed

you might be able to help figure out the wiring for the 4x4 and the reverse lights.....?????
