smotocon1
will a XT cluster work? on a standerd GL
Dr. RX
No the XT is different. I know this isn't going to help you now, but I am in the process of trying to figure out how to do this conversion, but it probably won't happen for another couple of months. It will be for an 86 GL-10, and though it may be similar, there may be enough difference between the two that it might not work on an 87 or new digi-dash. Turbone
I have 2 of these digidashes. Both from AT's, but they were 2wd. There wont be a light to tell you its in 4wd, but you might be able to rig up something for a light from the switch. I'm in Buckley, Wa.
kiljoi
Dr. RX, have you made any advances in your dash conversion research? smotocon1, I have a 86 XT-T 4x4 with the irritating digital dash. I am thinking of using aftermarket gauges hooked up to the factory wires instead of converting to a factory analog dash.
subaru_styles
the RX cluster is analog on a turbo car.....would it swap onto a digi turbo car????
Flowmastered87GL
One thing that has not been brought up... Some of the senders are different for different dashes. Example... the oil pressure sender. Its a little small thing that comes out the front of the pump on GL-10 digidash models. On GL analog models (and RX's) it is a big huge thing that comes down diagonally from the pump. I know this from experience. I bought the engine from Corky that came out of ultimate RX and of course it was setup for an analog system. Well it went into a digidash car. Needless to say the oil light came on the second we started the car because it got the wrong signal (it was trying to send to a guage and instead sent to a light) So... even if you get the guages to hook up by hacking wires... you will have the change the oil sender (and maybe something for the voltage too??) GeneralDisorder
Other senders are also different - the fuel level sender inside the tank for example..... it's no easy swap. Look up all the specs in the FSM.... there's a lot more to it than figureing out the wireing (not that that is particularly easy either). Dr. RX
Update on the conversion, yesterday I took a look at the two dashes (yes they are both from turbo cars). The digi dash has a total of 44 wires going to the car, the analog has 42 wires. I looked at the wire diagram and most of the engine wires are the same (although the sensors may be different), but those account for less then half of the wires. Since the rest of the wire are on about 10 different wiring diagrams, it may take awhile to figure out the rest. In the FSM, there is a neat figure the shows where all the wire from the digi dash go, so that will help. Don't expect this to happen over night, this is not a priority project for me. Flowmastered87GL
Hmmm trying to figure out what the extra wires may be for... The only thing I can think of that a digi has that an analog doesnt is the outside temp guage...
86subaru
how about changing a 88 dl analog , and putting a analog from a 86?
kiljoi
I just aquired a copy of the Mitchel repair manual CD. Thought this wiring diagram would help the cause. Its a full diagram of an 86 XT Instrument Panel. Both digital and analog are shown. The attached pic is the largest allowed by the forum, but it gives an idea of what it is. I can e-mail the full 400 res. version to anyone that is interested. (better if you have a cable modem though )
