p3pppx
Just blew a tire (Michelin Symmetry H) w/approx 30k miles. Being that it's a '00 Outback can I buy one new tire (only Symmetry S available). How would that affect the AWD, should I replace all four even though they're good for 65k? Any recommendation on equivalent all-season replacements? Thanks. NOMAD327
I would say you need to find a used tire, either same brand with similar tread depth, or any other tire with same outside diameter and similar wear rating so it stays that way. One other option is to buy the tire new from a vendor large enough to have a tire shaving machine and have the new one cut down to match. It's not an option to drive with different dimension tires on the car.
Flowmastered87GL
I would say get 4 new tires. But... if you can find a used one with the same tread depth (and exact same model and size) then you should be fine... SHOULD be fine, not WILL be fine. I can only guarantee the 4 new tires method

badjer
I asked a similar question a week or so ago. You might want to read through the responses I got in this thread http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=14366 I went with 4 new tires, although mine had 60k on them they still had quite a bit of tread left. badjer
SevenSisters
When you guys buy 4 new tires, save the 3 good old ones and post them for sale on the board. Just a thought so the tire companies don't get too rich.
Strakes
I bought a set of tires last month from the tire-rack. The guy on the phone mentioned after learning that I had a Subaru, that they have a tire shaving machine and that a previous caller, (also a Subaru owner) wanted his 1 tire purchase shaved to a specific circumference...they were happy to do that for an all-season passenger tire even though they usually use that machine to shave competition tires for racing.
