foresterxtguy
So my brats gas tank has a hole in it. Its not a big hole but big enough for gas to leak out. I'm tring to figure out my options. 1. Do I try and fix it? Which I have no idea how to. 2. Do I spend an arm and a leg to get one from a yard out west? I'm in PA 3. Get a fuel cell and mount it in the bed? Not sure if it will pass inspection. Unless some one has a spare on the forum.... The tank is already out of the car just need some advice. Thanks in advance

turbosubarubrat
there is a few options to fixing it you can cut the rust out and weld anther piece on and it should be fine, you dont even need a welder for this (if you dont have one) get epoxy and put it on the piece of metal and it will last a long time but you want to make sure theres a good seal on it so you dont loose gas, i have even heard of people using bondo for fixing gas tanks. if you use a fuel cell just make brackets for it to be able to fit where the factory one was and i would have a aluminum one so you dont have to worry about rust
talldude
Either weld a patch on yourself or have a welder do it, and be done with it. Take proper precautions so as not to level your neighborhood if you do weld it.
Brat78
I just bought one for my 78 brat from a yard in washington state and it was only $120 shipped to georgia. Search car-parts.com That's where I found mine.
moosens
Anyone near I-5 Auto in Chehalis WA ?? Shows a tank for $35. Just spoke to them and they will NOT ship a tank. If someone wants to grab this and ship it to me I'd pay well. Thanks

Giant
If the hole isn't too big, JB Weld works pretty good. Just make sure you clean it down to bare metal first. If the hole is big enough to need a patch, fiberglass with a POR 15 coating inside the tank will work great. Good luck finding anyone who will weld on a gas tank. Both methods are really just buying you time, so be on the lookout for a new tank. The JB Weld lasted quite a few year on my El Camino though. 88wacaroo
You can weld on a fuel tank safely if you fill it with water. The inside coating crap just starts to flake off over time and starts plugging stuff-IE-carb, fuel filters, pump,I"ve seen my buddies do it on motorcycles-last about a year or so then issues!! I"d weld it-nothin but a thing!! Gen 1 wgn. here I don"t rememb.if it was 2 or 4x I"m going up there now.. Super clean car-windshield,frt.end,dash-all gone
