test pipe??

96 legacy 2.2 4dr sedan

Does anyone make a "test pipe" for the short pipe directly behind the

Y pipe?

 

If not...anyone know of a cheap online source for replacement?

I don't know of anyone that makes one. Your best option is to have a local exhaust shop fab you up a "test pipe" to use.

This should fit. I know it says 98-05, but I'm pretty sure the 96 will have the same style exhaust.

Thanks but that cannot be it. Mine does not take a 90 degree bend...it has a flat flange on each end. Just after the Y pipe. It is a resonator or c converter pipe

That really should work on your car. I don't know why it says 98-05. But subaru has been using the same style headers on the EJ since 90 with the first ej22. They all have the flange that points toward the pass side of the car coming right off the header.

That's why that has a 90 deg bend, it's supposed to bolt directly to the header.

That's also why the ad states it comes with some aftermarket cat and an o2 sensor bung.

 

What are you trying to accomplish here? If you want to make a lot of noise just unbolt the axleback.

yeah - take a picture of the part you want. i bet we're not talking about the same things but we're all right. 96-99 exhaust parts are all the same and interchangeable (minus the different exhaust flanges at the heads, but that's benign for this discussion).

i bet he's looking for the part immediately after the converter and thus doesn't see the 90 degree bend - even though he has one.

 

so describe exactly what part you want - but yours does have a 90 degree bend in it, unless it's non-stock/non-original in which case we won't be able to answer your question since any parts won't mate up to it.

 

if he doesn't want the 90 degree bend, or doesn't know what it is i bet he's just looking at this part which is after the 90:

I did not realize it has an O2 sensor on it,,,crap...so I have to get a cat?

And I'll bet the cheapie ones will throw a code after a short life...?

I could use an O2 cheater...

I actually used to own a 96 legacy, and I'm pretty sure it did have a 90 deg bend off the header. But I'm not gonna argue.

 

You technically don't need the cat or second o2 sensor. All you really need is the first o2 because that's the one in charge of controlling the mixture.

The second one just says if the cat is functioning properly.

The only thing that'll happen not having a rear o2 is it'll probably throw P0136 Rear Oxygen Sensor Circuit Malfunction. Which shouldn't really hurt anything.

i've used the cheapy ones before and they didn't throw a code but they do rust quickly. maybe just surface and they'd still last 10 years, i dont know.

 

we're still unclear which pipe you're talking about but yes the catalytic converter is in there.

 

can you simply have it repaired - have a shop weld it back together? $45 and you're done for another couple years. might be worth it.

ignoring that short piece the front manifold is easily seen as one piece and it's usually the parts after this that fail so that's probably what he's looking at.

 

i have a 96 daily driver and a 95 right now - they have the 90 degree bend.

 

maybe there's a different one out there...a picture would be most helpful since those would be far more rare if they exist in 1996.

You stated you wanted a test pipe, a test pipe has no cat. They also sell high flow cats that look like the same thing. As for the 02 sensor, the bung is there, if you don't have an 02 sensor in that location on your car, then you use one of the supplied plugs to screw in the bung and seal the hole.

Comedy option. Screw a spark plug into the o2 plug hole. Get a really long plug wire and run it down from the coil pack. Since you'll have lots of unburned fuel from no ignition on one cylinder, it'll blow fireballs.
