nutt7
when i turn my key to the 'run' position, a humming noise comes from under the hood most of the time, well not a hum, but more like a ererererert, like a hum with a soar throat. anyway, today it carried a different tune, and the wagon, which usually fires up right away, took like 5 sec to start...i thought it was my fuel pump, but i thought on an 86 turbo it was in the rear of the car... any ideas? I have some worn vacuum lines if this helps...everything else works great... thanks, eric

nutt7
it only happens for a few seconds...it is not the fan...any other possibilities?
oddcomp
mine does it it used to have the air suspension junk previous owner swapped it with regular suspension junk its prolly the air compressor in the drivers side fender building up pressure since it takes amps and volts to run a 12volt compresor that might be why it took a bit extra due to the extra load on the battery ? Subi81
What about the cruse control bulding pressure? When ever I turn on my cruse control you can hear the pump fun for like 5 sec.
nutt7
could be the cruise...I will check it out...will it do that before it starts? it has never had air suspension... thanks eric
Subi81
OK just check my car: Pushed the cruise button and turned the key to accel = nothing Turned the key to ON and BURRRRRRRRRRBT, the compressor ran. So on my car the compressor gets power before the engine starts Goood luck
calebz
Sounds like you are hearing your fuel system pressurizing. You are correct in thinking that your fuel pump is toward the back of the car, but on mine, I can still hear the system building pressure under the hood when the key is first turned on... Maybe the change in its sound also has something to do with it taking a few seconds longer to start.
