madkow007
Hi I have a 89 ea82 non turbo 4x4 d/r 5 speed GL wagon. Does any one know if there is a way to bypass the ignition amplifier on the coil bracket? Or if there is a coil I can install that will bypass this? Maybe someone out there has one they could sell me? (coil bracket) Lots of questions...eh? Thanks
subarubrat
The ECU alone does not have the capacity to fire the coil, that is why it uses the amplifier to fire the coil. Wiring the coil directly to the ECU would give you a weak or no spark and depending on the impedence of the coil, maybe damage the ECU.
madkow007
Hmmmmm That doesn't sound good at all. Any Idea where I could get one? Closest junk yard is 120 mi. down the road. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
subiemech85
are you sure it's not the noise filter? with one end to coil and one end to ground? is it a carb? accel 8140c
archemitis
89, must be spfi or mpfi. my 85 mpfi system doesnt have one, as far as i know. but my 89 spfi has a coil with alot of plastic on it. what cars had this thing?
Adam N.D.J.
Anything with an optical dizzy. 89+ SPFI, MPFI, Turbo, ER27's. I too had a problem with one of these during my motor swap. They are a real pain to get a hold of. Basically all it is is a large transistor, so technically there is a way to make up your own, but you would have to figure out whot size it is any find one that pretty much matches it exactly to work right. Whot it does, one side recieves signal from the ECU, the other side connects to the negative side of the coil. When the computer sends the IA the signal, the transistor closes, grounding the coil, and fireing the spark. The two wires you can see, the third grounds to the coil bracket, which is why you MUST have a good ground through the bracket. Simple, in theory, really. Did a little research, here's whot I came up with, one of these MAY work: http://www.cranecams.com/index.php?show=browseParts&lvl=5&prt=160&PHPSESSID=b2b9f3f451e1f222790845bb7ee2638b http://rds.yahoo.com/S=2766679/K=ignition+amplifier/v=2/SID=e/l=WS1/R=20/H=0/*-http://www.qkits.com/public/qkits/k2543.htm
madkow007
Hi all Sorry...it is an spfi. I will check out these links and see what I can learn. The one in the 88 parts car already went into the wifes car..so here I sit Put in new timing belts and coil still no luck...was the same thing the wifes car did...ran fine one day and wouldn't start the next day. (head gettin soar) Tried this bracket in her car and get the same thing...dead. Thanks for the links...I'll see what I can find out
