crazyman03
'95 Impreza - 2.2NA, Automatic. For a while now, I get a really random Cylinder 2 Misfire.. it just comes and goes as it pleases. I thought it might be timing belt related, so replaced the timing belt, new pullys, water pump. It still comes at random times? Before anyone asks, Yes, the misfire occured with everything "stock". New Plugs, wires, (OEM) air filter. Nothing special. Any ideas? When it pops up, I'm usually on the highway - runs pretty sputtery that you can hear it in the exhaust then boom, CEL. Couple 30 seconds later the sputting goes away and drives like normal. After plugging it in I only get a Cyl 2 missfire code. I can clear it, and it wont come back for another 2, 4 8 months or so. doesnt matter how i drive it. Conservatively, Bat-outta-heck, Hillbilly hand shift, doesn't matter. -Justin Edited April 9, 2013 by crazyman03
lmdew
Swap the injectors to another spot and see if the fault follows. I had a 2.2 that missfired, with stock plugs, wires, coils and the injector fixed it.
gbhrps
crazyman03, Two OBW's ago, an 04 had pretty much the same circumstances. The codes couldn't identify the culprit, and the car was too new that anything would require replacing. The dealership threw some parts at it, plugs, and wires, and finally swapped the ignition coil even though it tested good. The problem was solved. Have you got access to another coil that you could temporarilly swap?
crazyman03
I dont really have access to anything or any money to throw at it. I'll probably try a new coil at some point. I did test it and it looks good. The cyl 2 misfire is just so random its hard to test thoroughly. -Justin
1 Lucky Texan
at least you have a code pointing to a cyl. I'm fighting random misfire/bucking with no codes. swap the injector at cyl 2 with cyl 4 and see if the symptom follows as suggested. No money involved, just wrenching time. johnceggleston
swap the plug wire first. that's easy. and check the coil to wire connection for burn marks.
unibrook
Have you ever replaced your front 02 sensor?
Ngurdak
I also have this prob! My 2005 forester x threw a p 0301 and 0302, I replaced plugs and wires and it didn't fix . The car would still sputter and stop! I went to Subaru for a replacement coil $140 and after installing it,I turn thee engine over the car goes z... And then the power no longer works unless you un plug the negative on the batt and re set. Is there something I'm missing that would cause the new coil to behave like that? Like a reset?Use more dielectric grease? 3 bolts, 4 spark wires and a plug that was it. Spark Wires are in the correct order!
Fairtax4me
Either your battery is dead or you have a poor connection at the battery terminal or poor connection to the starter. Make sure the terminals and cable connections are clean and tight first. If so, charge the battery.

Ngurdak
It sure was the negative lead! Car starts But car continues to sputter and die. P 0301 p 0302!!!!! Maybe ecu, some sensor or ignition? I can keep the car running if I hold the RPM higher than 7 once I let off it putts and dies
ivans imports
the valves are geting to tight when hot addjust valve clearances check exhaust at rear for poping or uneven exhaust pulses aslo ohm out the plug wires and see if have a bad one. Also if headgaskets are leaking coolant into combustion chamber it may hit plugs and make it misfire. I also had a 02 forester that the vac line to feul reg was cracked and was not maken right feul preshure
