1992 Subaru Loyale

I just picked up a 1992 Subaru Loyale that did not run. I was told the timing belt needed to be replaced. I installed the new timing belt, but still have a no-start condition. I verified that I have the timing correct (I know that its easy to get it wrong if you are not paying attention). I have verified that I have, Fuel, Spark, and Compression. My compression numbers look great. (130-160 cold) I replaced the ignition coil, because the old one was out of spec. It turns over, but never catches, no combustion at all. The distributor was taken apart when I got it. I have lined it up and re-set it multiple times... Any suggestions to point me in the right direction?

You state that you have "verified that I have the timing correct"... are you talking valve timing?  How have you checked for spark?  For fuel?  Did you replace one timing belt or both?

 

If you do have compression, fuel, and spark, then it will start.  One of these isn't as it seems.

If you are saying you have verified the timing is correct, i would assume you know to rotate the crank 360 after installing the first belt, before installing the second.

 

Perhaps you have the fuel lines on backwards if you have removed them at all. The return side is after the regulator, the supply side is before the injector. The regulator is after the injector. The top most hard line on the fuel rail is the supply side. This only applies if you ahd the intake off for whatever reason, which you probably didn't anyway.

 

Check that the rotor on the disty is not 180 off time. The timing would be set after installing the belts, starting over from step one with the cam at the top, and then rotate the crank until the o deg mark shows, then set the disty.

 

for TDC, the disty should be pointing at the brake cylinder, just to the right of the rearmost clip or screw that secures the cap.

 

The dots on the cams will be pointing at the corner of the valve cover, say 4 o'clock for the disty side, and 10 o'clock for the opposite side.

 

The keyway on the crank pulley will be pointing down when the cylinder bores are centered (the 3 III marks on the flywheel)

 

Rotation is counterclockwise and the firing order is 1-3-2-4. #1 cylinder is the front passenger side with #3 behind it, and #2 in front on the diriver side and #4 behind it.

 

What references did you use for the timing belt procedure?

I actually know where Tulare is.  Personally from Stockton.  Anyhow like Eeyore said.  Something is missing.  There are alot of us that are mechanics that get this wrong.  MilesFox is dead on target.  There is an awesome thread on Timing.  Reset your distributor timing.

I used the subaru manuals to do both timing belts. I did rotatd the crank when I installed them. I was under the impression that the passenger side cam should be at somewhere between 10 and 11 o clock to re set the distributor.I have compression on all cylinders. And ai i can see fuel in the intake manifold after cranking.

I have a '90 Loyale and once could not get it to start.  It would crank forever, but never fire up.  I found the problem was the fuel pump. 

 

Rap on the fuel pump with something like a screwdriver handle.  That sometimes will get it to temporarily work.  It may take more than one attempt. 

 

If you get it to run, you need a new fuel pump.  If not, then more diagnostics are required.

This is correct, i just realize that i mis-posted and had to go re-edit my post.

 

The dot will be facing the sharp corner of the valve cover

 

Try to feel around with the gear inserting the disty for an 'in between' notch as you sort of have to twist it in to engage the gear.

The markings on my distribtor dont match the service manual, is that common?

 

I have bought disty caps cross referenced from nissan or whatever that go to the specific hitachi or noppondenso disty, and the numbering stamped on the cap was different than 1-3-2-4
