Bypassing the ABS module 95 LOB wagon

MY car had poor braking, found out the master cylinder had failed one channel, and i had to replace it once the whole thing failed.

 

Now that i have replaced it, i have been mysteriously losing fluid over the course of a week. Now i lose it over a course of a few days. At first, i thought maybe i was losing the fluid where the reservoir meets the cylinder, since i had to swap the original res to the new unit.

 

Well, yesterday i noticed that it is losing fluid from the ABS module, on the rear side of it where one of the caps are pressed into the valvebody unit.

 

I had already disabled the abs unit by unpluggung it when the solenoid would freak out, and ABS never works for me in winter driving, Not being able to stop because of the ABS, not my driving.

 

So i would like to bypass the abs unit entirely. I don't have a FSM to refer to. Hans anyone done this, or figured out a way to route lines to each other, tees, check valves, etc?

 

Unless i can find a junker unit to swap in as a dummy, but i don't want to pay a premium for a device that ultimately will not function once installed.

You just have to bypass the ABS pump either fittings or new lines. It has been done before, though you may want to look into a used unit just to make life easier.

 

The ABS unit is a flow through type, meaning the brakes work as if it isnt there when the ABS is not needed.

I just need to know which line is which. I got 2 lines in to the module and 4 lines out. There is some sort of proportioning or splitter module on the trut tower. It sends 2 lines back thru the firewall. I was hoping to find a schematic before i take anything apart, as this is my DD car.

disconnect the lines at the pump and brakes (and valve) and have some compressed air ready - blow it in one side and see where it comes out?

 

probably a waste of time - but maybe find an engine bay shot or junk yard with a non-ABS legacy/impreza and see how they route it?

 

should be able to trace the lines from the front brakes to the front components right?  i dont' recall those being buried but i've not looked much either.

 

given their sensitivity to rubber quality i am surprised about ABS...it has to cause a lot of accidents. but, ABS works fine in the winter with new tires. with aged tires it is absolutely scarry, can't even come to a stop on steep mountain grades, i suspect many accidents around here are due to tires, college town with lots of out of staters from flatland. compound quality is huge and degrades with time. i lean towards running my worst tires in the summer and having new tread in the winter.

I don't care for abs since my driving habits were learned without it. I like to lock up my tires momentarily as i can predict the handling of my car this way. I also live in a collegie town with a lot of flatlanders running around. I may just resort to having someone ship me a whole module if i cannot find one from a junker locally for a good price. 

 

It only bothers me as much as all of my cars have some sort of air in the lines issues, being the last one i fixed the line on, i havent bled it out yet. The other one popped a line from the line rubbing on the tire, and the ambulance that i just replaced the rear brake lines on, hoping the font don't go and blow out.

 

This is the part where i have 5 cars, but can only drive 2.5 of them at a time

ha ha, i totally get it man, keep it up!

 

www.car-parts.com should have a real cheap one for you, or someone on here. get the right one, not sure how much they varied over the years.

 

i've heard of places that make brake lines, like stainless steel to your spec's - length and fittings.  you could entertain having a couple lengths made with the fitting sizes so you're ready to connect the lines together if you wanted to bypass it....but probably simpler to just get a cheap used unit.

 

even splicing/bending the lines probably isn't that hard in that easy to work in space to make your own.
