Long story short I had a timing belt that stretched and I locked the ties up without clutching in (jay walker with child walked 10 ft in front of my car at 10 MPH) and my car lost power and stalled. Well I got the new belt on and set up right and it still idles very rough, and given how the exhaust note sounds, it sounds like the exhaust valve is not fully closed.. you be the decider.

Now I have a few questions, I'm at the point where I was thinking about getting a Ej22 for a project for next year, I assume I need a Automatic Ej22E because it has the EGR, and it's a drop in replacement? OR take the EJ25 out and inspect the passenger side head and see what damage I have.. OR....

Get the EJ22 anyways and put it in and look over the EJ25 at a later time?

and before you ask...

Yes the cams are set correct.

Looks lined up.

I beleive I threw out most of my valves from paritng 2.5's and have more to do but not for a few weeks likely.

I used to do a lot of 2.2 swaps.  Yes the 95 auto(EGR) is the best/simplest.

Since you know htis 2.5 you may want to fix it.  On unknown or neglected cars a 2.2 is a very easy decision.

What are you saying a 2.2 would still be good? I've put almost 60K on the car, did the head gaskets 2 years ago.. would be sad to see it go since the EJ25D gets so much bad press

I'm simply saying 2.2's are sturdier.  No HG issues which means less rod bearing issues.

I also said that if you know this 2.5 it may be worth fixing.  But when I dealt with unknown engines/cars the best solution for me was to do a 2.2 swap.

It's your choice.  ANd not a real clear cut one in this case.  If it had many heat cycles fue to HG's for instance I'd definately say 2.2 it.

Timing belt stretched?  Stalled the engine locking up tires?

Why would this cause a bent valve?

Have you done a compression test?  that would be the easy way to tell.  But when 2.DOHC engines bend valves, they rarely run at aall afterwords.....let alone driveable.

See if I get replacement heads wont they need to be sent to the shop first before I put them on? meaning having the heads machined? I can get heads for like $75 each.. the weather gods love me so it's going to rain about everyday but Sunday..

I would still be switching to a Ej22 at a later date.

The good thing is I can remove the engine a lot faster then I did before for the first time.

i agree - the belt should not have jumped time, sounds like something else is wrong.  if cars jumped time due to incidents like this we'd see it all the time, i've never seen that happen.

do whatever you want, replace valves, swap heads, get another engine - they're all decent options just depends on you.  replacing valves leaves you the same known heads, that's nice. but used heads are usually fairly high percentage. since the EJ25 is in good shape an EJ22 swap may be the most economical.  buy an EJ22 for $400 (or less) and sell the EJ25 for the same, or more.

Actually the 2.5 has a lower CR than the 2.2 does.

2.2 is 9.7:1

2.5 is 9.5:1

I would replace the valves, since you know your engine is in otherwise good shape, hasn't been overheated, etc.

Sorry I meant later on I'd need to put the DOHC heads on the Ej22 for lower compression

How much of a pain is it to change the valves? I'm still really thinking about doing the swap but keeping the EJ25 for the time being to pick parts off it..

i put the engine on an engine stand and face the valve stems up to 12 noon.  i cut a side slot in a socket, spark plug socket I think.  the slot allows you to pull the retainers/keepers out with a magnet. put allthread into the socket to give me a handle with washers and stuff for surface area and simply used the brute force method - pushing them down by hand.  it is REALLY hard and probably a lot of folks wouldn't do it that way, but i've done a bunch like that.

they sell some nifty contraptions that bolt to the end and press the valve springs too...not sure if they'll work for your EJ25 or not, i forget which engines they're for...but it's some of the really recessed motors.

So a compression test. We have a 251 in the shop now that had so much slak in the tensioner that the crank skipped 4 teeth and it's still looking fairly good as far as compression and smoke testing.

Personally don't waste you time with the 25d if it has bent valves. Pooparu on this board went through everything resurfaced the block and head spechial head gaskets. And in 2 years they blew agin. Not worth the time nor the money.

You can get a jdm import 2.2 use a 2.2 non import (US make) intake and the 25d harness with that. Drill and tap a new hole in the motor for the egr.

I'm not going to do a jdm swap that's just extra work for nothing.. I'm trying to find out how the car would drive with a ej22 with 2.5 heads.. I think it would really drop the compression.. but if its not drivble then I can do that later.

So how does shoc engine work on a dhoc ecu?

the ej22 would run fine with the dohc ecu, people do it all the time in this swap

my calculations say that you'll be looking at 9.1-9.3:1 compression depending on the year of the donor ej22 with 97-99 ej25 heads

im going to build one of these as soon a I get the heads from Gary, but I'm trying to run down some SVX pistons, that will put it at 10.7-10.8:1 compression

I think that just means its an ej22, looking on one of my parts suppliers site the only option for a 95 is vin code "6", is this a place you could call and ask for the vin of the vehicle?  I'm not sure what year they started but I've seen on a couple 96's I've pulled apart that the full vin in on the RH side bellhousing area of the engine.
