A/C starts cold, but turns hot after a few minutes...?

Recommended Posts

2004 Forester XS. 100% Stock. Just had the refrigerant refilled.

Like the title says, the A/C always starts out cold, but becomes hot after a few minutes. If I turn the A/C off for an extended period of time (hour or so?) it will come on cold again.

It has been like this since I bought the car in May of 2012 and I never cared. I always put the windows down anyway, but my pregnant sweating wife is having NONE of that. Please help before she kills me!

who refilled it? if you refilled it yourself, did you have the a/c going and the clutch was enabled before you ran the can? the gauge will read a false reading if you just put it on the fitting and open the can up without the clutch running.

probably low and you probably have a leaky oring.  $5 fix, very easy.

you can buy the cheapie ghetto gauges for a few bucks at an autoparts store to measure the current pressure to see if it's low.

if it's low then and was charged properly/working before then you simply need to replace the two orings on the compressor ($5 and 15 minutes):

I had it filled at the dealership when I took it in for unrelated service.

It blows Ice cold for 10 minutes, then gets hot. So I don't think it is low on refrigerant. If it were, it would just be warm all of the time. A bad clutch sounds like it could be the problem.
