darsdoug
I'm presently contemplating the 1999 OBW DOHC 2.5 HG project my son in law has put on a back burner due to improper timing belt installation and the subsequet bending of the valves. It's a 5 speed Manual transmission OBW and I'd like to know if that shortblock will mate (exactly) with the "Automatic" transmission bellhousing in my 2.2 1999 Legacy "L" wagon? matt167
Will bolt up, but if your thinking 2.5L swap for your '99 L, it won't work because the '99 2.2L is a phase 2 and the wiring is all different
johnceggleston
actually the 99 ej25 obw dohc engine is in fact a phase 2 block with the phase 1 DOHC heads. it is a hybrid engine from the factory. so the 99 ej25 obw block will in fact bolt to the 99L auto trasn. and it will bolt to the 99 ej22 phase 2 heads. that is a very unusual swap and i do not know the details on how to. but if you were dedicated, you could do it. but it would be much simpler to find a 99 - 00 ej22 engine to swap in. but it is only a 2 year engine. or to find a 00 - 02 ej25 engine to swap in, you would need the exhaust y-pipe from your 99 obw. or a third and probably cheaper option would be to find an 00 - 02 ej25 engine with rod knock, not uncommon. use the good heads off of that 'rod knock' block and bolt them on your 99 ej25 short block. then use the y-pipe from the 99 obw, and the intake from your 99 L and install that in your 99 L. i little complicated, but doable. bluedotsnow
make sure the trans your putting in matches the rear differential gear ratio! if not your going to shred a diff! we just got into a a 98 obw that someone thought it would be a great idea to replace only two front tires so they mismatched 205/75/15 in the front and 205/70/15 in the back BAD NEWS! got the new trans in and found out my roomie who did the inspection didn't even do a compression test or really check the block so now we have to do head gaskets too x.x measure twice! The bigger issue will be dealing with the upper end problems. johnc has given several options for dealing with the upper end of things. Ideal would be sourcing good heads from the same engine type, but there are other options as noted above. Edited July 9, 2013 by heartless
Fairtax4me
Of course it will bolt up. Shouldn't be any issue there. Just have to use the heads and manifolds from your car on the 2.5 short block. Heads have to match the manifold, manifold has to match wiring, wiring has to match car.
