NorthWet
Are you sure that the gear is stripped? I can't imagine any realistic way that that could happen. The only stress on it is from the distributor, and it is a pretty hefty gear. Did you actually see the teeth stripped off of it? It is more likely that it sheared the woodruff key that keys it to the camshaft. It is even more likely that something else more common is the issue. If it really is stripped, I have several spares. Lacyjs9
yeah it ate the teeath of the gear off the cam i was assuming it knocked the gear of the distributor too but its the gear on the cam pulled the teeth out with a magnet id kinda like to get the whole assembly it seems like it would be easier
Gloyale
I wouldn't trust that engine. Something weird and bad happened to make that gear strip. I've never heard of that happening on an EA82. There is like ZERO stress on that gear. At any rate a camshaft is easy to find. Now matching it to the passenger one is a little trickier, they changed up cams a bit over the years and fuel setups. What year? SPFI or Carbed or MPFI turbo or non? I'll bet there are dozens of us with cams lying around we could send you.
Lacyjs9
the timing belt did break but which broke first or if one could make the other break i dont know . its a 86 sw 2 barrel Edited August 5, 2013 by Lacyjs9
Gloyale
Yeah, you'll need to get an 85,86 carbed cam, or get both cams from an 87 carbed or an SPFI. A problem that could strip the teeth could also load up the cam and cause the belt to break. Does the distibutor spin freely? Are there any signs that the cam was starved for oil?
