WJM
First things first....get a MAF adapter plate, and fit a 3 inch ID cone filter to it, and bolt it in the MAF (or flapper air flow meter for the pre MAF ones). For a quick exhaust fix...gut BOTH cats and hack the muffler off. Bam, thats ATLEAST 20 HP there. Now, to get a little more complex...a good header and Down pipe will be sure to unlock an additional 10-20 HP, exspecially if there is no back pressure at all in the system... Delta Cams, (http://www.deltacam.com/) the 677-260 grind, is VERY streetable, and will unlock an additional 10-20 HP, and free up those upper RPMs (5500-7500) for use, as long as the intake and exhaust is free flowing, and NOT factory. So, intake, header, DP, cams...that should get you going. There are a many different little things...such as fine adjustments to timing, and replacing ignition components with quality ones to unlock a little more power, and add to the stability of the powerband that will keep the engine happy. Key things to remember: KEEP THE ENGINE COOL! Run a 180 deg F T-stat, and make sure the Rad is up to do the job. Also, please run synthetic in these turbo engines...Mobil 1 10W-30, its the best. There are a few other mods that have not been entirely proven yet...but look to give another good bit of power...those are the XT6 Throttle body, and the Spyder Intake manifold. Archive please! iluvdrt
what if you just took out the thermostat? would it never heat up to oprating temps?
WJM
No t-stat=bad. The coolant would circulate too fast, and would not pick up the heat properly, that and it would take a while to get up to temp...and engine runnability problems. Ive tried it. Warp3
gut BOTH cats Much easier said than done on the one in the downpipe. Any suggestions for this cat (other than the cut open, peel back, gut and reweld suggestion that I've seen in the past)? But you are correct...turbo cars want the mostly freely flowing exhaust you are willing to give them (unlike N/A cars which need appropriately sized tubing as too large will kill exhaust velocity and reduce scavenging at lower RPM). Myxalplyx
Thanks WJM for yet another informative post. I've been following your posts as well as other to gather as much info as possible for when I own a 1.8ltr turbo someday. I'm just a big chicken as far as the Delta Cams go. My experience with the cams on an N/A XT6 haven't been good at all. Lost a lot of power. But I guess I could go with the Delta's for the EA82T since there are others who has had good experiences as wll.
oddcomp
my recent adventure into the more power for ea82t realm involved the use of a saab apc unit <automatic power control> it regulates and controls the boost pressure and keeps it rock steady does wonders just with stock settings but it is adjustable if you know where the adjusters are i don't recall what teh stock suby boost is but with a unchanged apc unit i hit 10 psi right dam quick and it stays there until i either let off the or it senses spark knock/detonation then it drops the boost a little at a time until it goes away basically letting it run as much power as the motor can tolerate with out detonation also in stock setting once your ast around 4500 rpm it tapers teh boost down a few psi but that to can be adjusted all in all its a cheap way to have a smart boost control system installed on a 87 gl10 with 218k miles anda 3speed auto even i can chirp tires off the line now not sure how much more power its added but there is a huge improvement my next steps are programable fuel injection <lots of power gain there and economy> and hopefully distributorless ignition system also lots more power/smoother running and economy plus a intercooler when i can find one i can afford working on a blow off recirc valve tonight at work hopefully i have a 2" exhaust with a hi flow cat i found premade in a junkyard <wierd but hey it works> and cut out the bottom of the airbox hey both have helped alot and for a muffle i used a 22 dollar shucks special someting called a raptor muffler with 2-1/4" ins and outs and a short section of 2" cooper pipe to finish it i hope this did not jack anyone thread but it is after all ea82t mods

I know this is still a cut, gut, reweld operation but I think it is far superior to the pulverize method. This is a WRX down pipe but I'm sure the technique could be adapted. Note: The material in Cat converters is somewhat harmful to humans especially when turned to dust and most importantly should be disposed of safely (take it to a muffler shop) Heavy metals are bad for ground water... PS, oddcomp.. send me a trigger wheel, we'll work on the EDIC!
baccaruda
you can also get rid of your A/C and convert from power to manual steering. and loosen the alternator belt a little. Isn't someone making lightweight EA82 crank pulleys? and don't forget about running premium with your timing tuned in advance.
WJM
The first cat is easy....if you know how to weld and can get access to a welder. Cut the neck off the can at the top...take a rod and a hammer (or a long long drill bit and drill, and drill out the cat and cage holding it) and knock the cat out. Then, weld it back together. Ive done three like that.
garner
Isn't someone making lightweight EA82 crank pulleys? I made one for myself and am trying to figure out how to get them made at a reasonable cost. I can make them myself, GMC (garner manual control) machined, for about $150. WJM, Hope you're disposing of the cat crumbs properly.....I'd rather cut (and weld) than crumble.... garner
