silverhelme
Should be the same except for the converter. The converter will work just has a slightly different stall speed.
NorthWet
Should be the same except for the converter. The converter will work just has a slightly different stall speed. This is also my understanding. I do not recall having heard anyone say that they were not interchangeable.
ivans imports
i belive the tail shaft is longer on ea81 trans but cant remember
Gloyale
Gear ratios can be different too. EA81s and early EA82 are 3.7 later ea82 are 3.
BratRod
Alright, thank you, guys. The reason I ask is, because there is some one who has a transmission for sale a couple hours away. Figured I could save a little on shipping if I could get him down on the price. http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/pts/4010782624.html
MilesFox
It is possible to swap between . I have swapped an ea82 3at FWD into an ea81 hatch. It bolts up the same to the motor, but i had to fab a piece to adapt the rear part of the trans mount. Yu may have to mix'n'match the torque converter or the flexplate. silverhelme
The flex plate and converter stay the same, use your original unless you have metal in the fluid. You can use an ea82 converter if you have to and it will bolt up but may have a different stall speed.
ivans imports
I still think is a tail shaft difference
silverhelme
You may be correct ivan. Interchange shows 84 down and 85 up. He may be able to swap the output shaft and housing if I remember correctly.
86BRATMAN
If you weren't so far away I'd give you the 3at in my basement to get it out of the way.
BratRod
Alright, guys. That's what I wanted to hear. The seller still hasn't responded back to me, though. I ended up finding a thread last night that someone just changed the stator shaft, and it worked. @86BRATMAN: That is very kind of you. I hate being so far away from Subaru parts, especially having two brats now! Id still take it if you feel like shipping it, but I figure there is a reason it is in the basement. 86BRATMAN
There is a perfectly good reason lol, I parted out an auto brat and thought it might come in handy just in case. I have no idea its condition other than the brat had around 90k miles, a seized engine, and no rear frame to hold anything up lol. I packrat stuff when I have the opporatunity. As far as shipping it, I don't have a problem with that if you wanted to do the leg work. I can provide an address and fork lift loading for pickup. And can probably get ahold of a good pallet, banding straps, and shrink wrap.
BratRod
Awesome! I'll work things out on my end and see what I can come up with. I'll drop you a PM with what I figure out.
