Compromise snow tire size OBW & Legacy

Recommended Posts

I've got a '98 Legacy 4EAT and a '98 OBW 5MT. Is there a snow / tire rim combo which can fit both cars? The OBW has the larger brakes, so I don't think a standard Legacy rim/tire will clear. My concern is that both cars are high mileage and if one dies, I'd still like to be able to use the tires/rims on the other car for this winter.

TIA,

Nathan

I've read that a 205/60/15 will clear the spring perches on a Legacy L or GT, but it may depend on tread design.

A 195/60/15 is the stock size for an L or GT equipped with 15" wheels. That size is quite a bit smaller than the stock outback tire, so running that size on the outback will cause the speedometer to read fast by about 5-7 mph at 60.

i had 195/60 15's which are about the same diameter as a 185-70 14.

These wheels cover a 2 pot caliper.

i have 205/60 15 with xt6 struts, real close to the spring perch, but a 205/70 is too large.

I vote on 195/60 15's in place of the 185/70 14

The Legacy L has 14" wheels, with the stock 185/70/14.

Right, but they had an option for 15" wheels.

If an L has 15" optional wheels it will have 195/60/15 tires.

No new wheels needed. Mount the tires on the 15" outback wheels and you can put those on either the L or the Outback.

Well, as luck would have it, I have a set of four like new snow tires size 195/60/15 from my Accord (it burned a valve and is going to be donated.) So, I will need a set of 15" rims which will fit the Subies (the Honda rims are 4-lug)  and I'll be golden. (I don't like seasonally swapping tires on to rims... too much hassle.) Thanks to all who helped.
