justajester
Hey guy and gals, I am new to the club so I should say my name is Tom and I justpurchased my 1982 Brat GL 3 weeks ago, running and in sort of decent shape for$900(not bad). Anyways, the car has the 31 year old blues right now with amyriad of rubber and plastic parts messed up, and general wear and tear itemsgoing out.I'm working out most of thoseproblems but, currently I'm rebuilding the carburetor(which is not in goodshape) and got to wondering about the oil in the air cleaner. It's clearly motoroil and since there is a lot of oil in the passenger side valve cover breatherhose and the inlet on the air cleaner I know it' coming from there. now I'veread in some forums about other cars(Chevy bigblocks mostly) that this can be cause by worn rings, vacuum problems, bad pcvvalve, various other things. I'm curious to know what exactly can cause it inthe brat and if I'm missing any parts that should be there.I know the PCV valve in the engine is badbut, it's not connected to that hose in anyway. There is no filter or valve inthat hose of any sort(should there be?). Other than that the engine does havequite a few vacuum leaks, missing vacuum and emissions hoses, is in bad need ofa tune up, has bad ignition coil, etc...All of this seems to be causing missing, occasional backfire, and stalling. Could any of that be causing the oil to comethrough the breather? Anything else I should look at? Also his car has the apparently nightmarish Weber-carter 1bbl Carb. Thanks in advance for any answers!-Tom
NorthWet
In general, oil in the carb/filter housing is just a PCV system issue, and not an indication of worn engine. The cylinders and rings on these engines are durable beyond belief (200k engines still show original machining marks) and valve seal wear does not seem to be an issue. Get a new PCV valve (experienced opinion says OEM is best). I would also check the fitting at the valve covers, as these tend to accrete crud and narrow the opening, leading to pumping-up of oil into the hose attached to it. Your engine is a very durable, dependable design. It has quirks, but is reliable as a rock.
justajester
Nice...good to know...That make me happy haha...now I just need to figure out how to ditch this 1bbl carb...I guess it's worthless and you can't find rebuild kits ....I also don't like my car dieing on left hand turns. djellum
theres only 1 pcv system, both sides are tied together. fresh air in the passengers side, gasses out the drivers side to the pcv valve. if your pcv valve is bad it may be causing some pressure. at least start there. most people will say just replace with a weber dgv. I don't know if the bolt pattern on your carter is different from the hitachi, so be sure to research what adapter you need. if you replace with a webber then all that spaghetti of hoses just disappears as the new weber doesn't need it. theres a metric ton of posts about that on the site, just look it up. justajester
Yeah i think i like the idea of the weber from reading....what do you guys put over the valve cover breather holes and pcv once all the hoses are gone? I know everything else gets plugged but, that too?
