the rest of gauges work but the speedometer doesn't and its not counting miles. I did some searching and jave found out cars from this era have issues with the speedometer frying, and also some of the lights are out so I'm gonna replace the cluster anyway. I only had one person say the speedometer gear. what do you guys think it is?

yeah, a pain. you need to pull the gauges out. remove speedometer from circuit board. solder front & back of the ground. There's a great write up & video on doing this. (the one about wedging a screw isn't secure/sure, don't bother)... this will work.

hey cool. thanks. blasted thing started working again but I doubt its gonna last.

it's not going to last, that's what they all do.  it would very, very, very rare for it to "quick and never work again" - they almost always are intermittent.

do the simple solder fix - it's actually really easy and doesn't take long at all - the cluster comes out in 15 minutes or less, simple.

like 2 lower screws and two uppers for the black plastic surround

2 or 4 screws to remove the instrument panel

then disassemble to repair.

the car can be driven just fine without the instrument panel too so you don't have to worry at all if it takes longer than you thought, etc.  i mean, you can't tell how fast you're going but just don't be stupid and it's pefectly drivable, i've done it a bunch of times, it's kind of funny and weird at first, but no biggie.

If you have a multimeter you can check the signal wires from the speed sensor for AC voltage while the car is rolling to see if the sensor is making a signal.

Just scan the OBD II and if there is no code for VSS it's still fine and just the speedo head is faulty.
