john in KY Posted November 26, 2013 Share Posted November 26, 2013 Not my problem. Someone on another forum swapped engines and now the installed engine won't even crank. All I know for sure is the engine is the DOHC 2.5. The car has a manual transmission and the engine came from a car with the automatic. Part of the 2.5 engine wiring harness doesn't connect to anything in the car. Thinking probably the harness that went to the automatic. Person with the problem states turning the key does nothing. Anyone have any ideas? Never owned a manual transmission Subaru but thinking the transmission has to be in neutral before the engine will crank. johnceggleston Posted November 26, 2013 Share Posted November 26, 2013 (edited) Part of the 2.5 engine wiring harness doesn't connect to anything in the car. this is the problem. all of my swaps have been auto to auto. but if there is a connector hanging loose, i would start there. if both engines are ej25D, i might swap the intakes, at least compare the connectors, to see if they are different. in all the posts i have read, i do not remember there being a wiring difference between auto and manual engines. but again, like you, i'm auto only. idosubaru Posted November 26, 2013 Share Posted November 26, 2013 Sounds like starter, cable issue, or the battery is too dead to turn the engine over, or the wiring harness isn't plugged in or fully seated. Can they get us a picture of the harness that isn't connected to anything? Would help to know what it is. In general EJ25 engines swap across auto to manuals without issue, that shouldn't cause issue. Can he read the codes via OBDII scanner - that would probably tell us what isn't plugged in. Fairtax4me Posted November 26, 2013 Share Posted November 26, 2013 On the engine itself there is no difference in wiring between auto and manual, except for the EGR valve, which any ej25d should have regardless. If he has wiring hanging loose he swapped part of the harness unnecessarily, or the part that plugs into it has fallen loose down by the transmission. Either way, the harness for the ECU will not affect starter operation. Only two wires for that and none of them should have been swapped. First thing is to make sure the battery has a full charge. Check for proper connection pf the positive cable at the starter, ground cable to the block with the upper starter bolt. Then check for 12v reaching the solenoid wire when the key is turned.
