90's legacy wagon, rwd/awd idea...

Recommended Posts

So, yeah, as the title says it's a RWD and AWD idea...

locking hubs up front, I know trucks can do it, toyota has a fairly small truck with locking front hubs, not exactly sure what goes into it but I might look into this..

unless someone else already has???

I was laying in bed and it clicked.

now, things I don't know:

central differential; act open with front wheels off ground??

how much will it hurt the transfer of power for the front wheels to be dis-connected?

what is a tyical RWD swap for the legacy?

the center clutch/diff sends power to whatever end has the LEAST grip, automatics are better because itcan be "locked" in 4/awd.

RWD swap for a legacy- pull front axles, and weld up center diff.Or buy an adapter belhousing to mount toyota rwd transmission to your engine.($400 in retrofitting or transplant forum).

Depending on your RWD shenanigans expect to go through rear axles like candy.

I think with a little work you can adapt the 80's rx center clutch. Its still awd but it has a switch you can control it. As for the axles I would say the joints themselves. problem is they were designed to get 50% of engine power so giving them 100% power is asking for trouble. You could put the WRX axles and rear diff in if you keep blowing axles/rear diff in rwd.Your lockable hub idea will require some fab work.

the car in my sig was lifted with a divorced T case so power went to the back at all times.Once I fixed the axles by putting legacy rear inner DOJ at both ends I didn't have any problems. However, while it had moretorque and bigger tires stressing the axles more it also weighed far less than a legacy or even an imp. Most of that weight was up front so rather than breaking axles, it would break traction and slide everywhere. It was like a 4wd AE86.

There is a purple drift legacy sedan and he blows axles all the time but doesn't upgrade them because axles are cheap and plentiful. if the axle isn't the weak link then the diff might blow, or the driveshaft, or the transmission.Every step up the chain gets more and more expensive and time consuming to fix.

find a center diff that's got torque bind (failed) and run it RWD.  l know people that have converted EJ's with locked VLSD to rear wheel drive.

same thing you want to do except add the front locking whatever, so figure that out and get a failed (people throw them away) VLSD or well it up as uberoo says.
