Nick Nack
I recently did my timing belts, front seals, and oil pump seal on my 1986 3door gl coupe, and am having a brain fart about the radiator after i put it back in. It's leaking out of an opening right by the drain plug that runs parallel with the bumper. Looking from under the car it's located at the bottom right hand corner. it looks to be about a 1/4inch opening with no notch for a hose clamp, and I see no hoses nearby that i forgot to reconnect. Did a plastic plug fall off when i was servicing it that i don't remember, or am i not seeing something? Any diagrams, or help would be greatly appreciated! I'm pretty new to all of this, and have gotten so much out of this forum already, I trust people here more than the FL mechanics I would bring it to…especially about an old soobie. ruparts
hi, i am thinking you are looking at the place where the drain petcock is supposed to screw in ,, if it was removed completely you can just put it back but if it got broken off somehow, you probably need to remove the radiator again to get the threaded part out of the tank. there should be a little plastic coller thing , looks like a banjo fitting with a drain hose attached to it, then the threaded plastic part of the drain valve which looks like a wingnut sort of affair, if you are just seeing a threaded hole then it's all missing , question is , did it break off , or did i forget to put it back in. djellum
the plastic drain plug opens up a to allow the coolant to go out that tube and into a rubber hose that you can point towards a container under the car (If I'm visualizing it correct). the plastic wing nut isn't supposed to come all of the way out, it just opens up to allow coolant out the tube. try tightening the plastic wing nut, or just plug it (short rubber hose on it, with a bolt or wooden dowel in the other end, hose clamp both ends). the only other thing to worry about is if you have an automatic transmission. there are sometimes built in trans fluid coolers that run in the radiator. if your leaking antifreeze then its not that. 86 Wonder Wedge
Is it a small tube, about 1, 1.5 inches long, very bottom of the radiator, several inches inboard from the tank? Passenger side, correct? Sticks straight down toward the ground (when the radiator is mounted in the car)? It sounds like you're describing the anchor pin that attaches to the radiator core itself. If it's leaking from there, that's not good... Otherwise, there is a small, 3/4 inch long nipple on the bottom pass side of the radiator that runs parallel with the frame rail. There is usually a 6-7 inch clear hose attached for the petcock drain, but IIRC, it's a plastic nipple. I think pictures are going to be the best bet.. lol
