roger1
2002 Forester 154K-- with the wipers are in use they "slam" all the way to return position and then seem to do same toward the passenger side door pillar after several "wipes". I pulled the motor loose so I could move arm that connects the 2 which has a 3/16 to 1/4" play without the blades moving. I am away from home and didn't want to pull vent cowling on driver side to really view linkage issue. Has anyone experienced this and since I'm not in Subaru "COUNTRY" did you get some recycled parts or how big of assy the "Stealers" does make you order? gbhrps
roger1, Pull the caps off the winshield wiper shafts, remove the 14 mm nuts and pull the arms from the shafts. Turn the wipers on and let them cycle a couple of times and park. Now install the driver's side arm, but tighten the nut just snug, try cycling, repositioning the arm, etc. until you're happy, then tighten the nut. Do the same procedure with the passenger side. You may get lucky and have no more issues. If it still drives you crazy, see a wrecker and replace the under cowl mechanism or motor, whichever hass more slop in it. I certainly wouldn't buy the parts from the dealership on a 12 year old car. Good Luck!
Fairtax4me
The arms can get loose if someone has tried to use the wipers to clear heavy snow from the windsheild. Check the wiper arms for excessive play by bringing them about halfway up the windsheild and turning the key off. Push/pull one around a bit and see if the other moves with it or if it just clunks around. If it clunks, remove the arm (pull off the cap and remove the 14mm nut), clean any loose metal from the notched area on the post. Use a pick or screwdriver to scrape them clean, then scrape out any loose material from the hole in the arm. Put the arm back on and tighten the nut down and it should cut new grooves in the softer material of the arm base.

mikec03
I had the same problem with my 02. I tried replacement bushings. They didn't work for long. Finally I went to a junk yard and got a complete replacement, motor and all. Fixed problem at low cost. I don't think that the wipers fail too often so there is no problem finding replacements at the junk yards.
