spicypeanut
I just learned that you can buy a brand new one from napa apparently. 314 + core charge of 35$ for a all brand new fully assembled head.
RustyBrat
really? who makes them?
moosens
Those are rebuilds, not factory new. About as good as the average owner can expect. I'm really surprised you didn't bid higher on those. Now look at the cost you're looking at. You young folks often seem to think because they are old Subarus you're going to have parts land on your lap for dirt. Try Danny W. who is "drivesubies" here and "dannybreadman" on eBay. He has tons of new old stock from real Subaru stock, not a close out of an auto parts store. Or give me some time to dig. It's bitter cold lately and I have very little to no time at storage.
RustyBrat
i always seem to get all the parts i DONT need for free, and what i do need cant be found anywhere!
jonpaul03
I tried bidding, but whomever was bidding as well had an automatic bid set with a reserve that was higher than I was able to get too. Everytime I bid their bid would trump mine by a dollar. The company listed on NAPA's website for cylinder heads is Moore's Cylinder Head. The same company is listed on all of the other autoparts store websites. I called the company and the cylinder heads for the 1600 are discontinued. I met a guy yesterday from Advanced Auto that said he uses a lot of outside vendors and he wants me to give him a call tomorrow. I doubt his vendors will have anything, but its worth a shot. ivans imports
Still no luck ? I do have 4 ea71 engines just cant get to them in the snow till it melts I also have 3 that are good runers complete ones still in cars
jonpaul03
Still no luck. I'm happy you have some and I will definitely keep you in mind, but I am desperately trying to get some sooner rather than later. I am at a standstill with my BRAT (other than small detail stuff) without good heads. If only I had kept the 79 BRAT when I joined the military I wouldnt be in this situation. Oh well....the search continues.
ivans imports
Well if you could figure out haw to get it there sell you a core for 50 $ had one with sticky valves but complete
jonpaul03
Ok...I wonder how much shipping would be. Do you think I would just have to remove the valves and clean them up, or would you reccomend I replace them all together? Which side is it? I need the passenger side head. I would rather replace both sides, but if I can replace the cracked passenger side head I would be happy for now.

jonpaul03
Just to let everyone know... I FOUND HEADS!!! I purchased a great set of custom rebuilt heads from J & H Diesel Truck Service Inc. & Machine Shop in Sarasota, FL. It was great doing business with them and now its time for the fun to begin.
moosens
Good job !! Just curious what you paid and if they arrived ok. I once bought a set of heads from some "racing" company in FL and the guy sent them clanking together with no padding ,etc. and that just wizzed me off. Check with Danny W - drivesubies here on dannybreadman on eBay for factory headgaskets and valve rocker covers ,etc ..... Good luck !!
jonpaul03
They were $175 per... I didnt mind paying the money cuz they are so hard to find....especially rebuilt and thouroughly tested. They were very well treated heads. I ordered them on ebay and had them in my posession within 5 days. I have all of the other items needed to put the motor back together except a good spider, but I may be able to put a new flare on the end that is broken. As long as I have enough room to keep the compression fitting out of the way.

jonpaul03
Thank you! Would you happen to have an EGR valve pipe that goes between the intake manifold and the cylinder head? and... the Spider tubes?
moosens
Caution !! There are two versions of those with different sized fittings at the end. the later version starts in late '78 for the '79 model year. Be sure to communicate with whoever you get them from and measure twice - buy once ! Cheers!
jonpaul03
Thank you for the heads up. They are the only thing keeping me from completing the rebuild...one of the bubble flare broke on the spider and the EGR valve tube was corroded so bad that I had to cut it and put a breaker bar on the compression fitting to get it off of the intake manifold. I will have re-engineer a solution if I cant find the correct tubes.
