GeneralZinn
hey guys and gals ok so i have some questions.. pretty sure they have ben answered plenty of times but easier for me to make my own thread for it i have a 1999 subaru legacy gt with a 2.5 bought it for my wife got a great price $500 for it and i knew befor getting it motor didnt run after pulling the engine i realized there was a fist sized hole in the top where a rod had come throught so ive ben looking around for a while for a new 2.5 seeing this is my first subaru figured i put the origional engine back in and up to this point im thinking of going with the 2.2 im going to be heading out to the you pull parts place this weekend im going to see if i can get a 2.2 is there any special one i need that will just plug and play and do i need to change any computer stuff or anything like that .. thanks for reading know its quite a bit thanks in advance
idosubaru
no electronics, wiring, or computer is needed - it is no different than installing another EJ25. bolt the EJ25 flywheel or flexplate to the EJ22. install a new timing belt kit whlie you're at it - all new tensioner, pulleys, and timing belt. 1997 and up EJ22's are interference. there are two style timing tensioners so choose your timing kit based on that (changed around 97 to a newer , less reliable tensioner set up). the EJ25 oil pump, timing pulleys, sprocket, and tensioner/bracket interchange with any Ej22 you buy. ALL 1995-1998 EJ22's will bolt in, plug and play, and run. it's a question of EGR and exhaust: 1995 automatic EJ22 is plug and play. install it and plug it in. minor differences in power steering line configurations, i just leave them hanging, they don't need bolted down anyway, otherwise use EJ25 brackets on EJ22 engine if you're looking for perfection. 1995 manual EJ22 won't have EGR but still works, you get a check engine light. there's a simple work around posted on this forum, find it. 1996-1998 EJ22 - get the exhaust manifold with it. they won't bolt up to the EJ25 exhaust - but the EJ22 exhaust fits right in place. get the ypipe/exhaust manifold with it (the part that bolts to the engine) and this becomes plug and play. 96-98 are more random in regards to EGR - but in a way it doesn't matter since there is an easy work around. just swap some vacuum hoses, very easy. there's also sometimes a evaporative emissions difference i think, though i haven'et worried about it here since the check engine light doesn't matter in this state. it's simply a difference between the "charcoal" canister being up front verses in the rear. not a big deal either. if you bolt an EJ22 intake manifold to an EJ18 you can even use one of those, but they are small and gutless. wouldn't be too bad as flat as it is around hinesville (i went to GT) and if it's a manual transmission or your wife doesn't mind small, gutless engines. the EJ22 is much better but Ej18's are awesome too! matt167
It's a remove and replace deal. If you get a '96+ EJ22 then you need the Y pipe but it's not a huge deal, just 2 bolts and an extra gasket to buy.. I would get a '95-'96 EJ22E from an automatic ( has EGR ). They are non interference motors and have HLA rockers so they are dead reliable
ccrinc
Gary, aren't you forgetting that a '99 2.5 has the 4 bolt pattern on the bell housing vs. the earlier 8 bolt? (IIRC) That means the starter is difficult to bolt on.
lmdew
Put a helicoil in the trans lower starter bolt hole and they will be good to go!
25percentbritish
This is great, I am planning to put a 2.2 into a 1999 legacy gt limited which currently has a 2.5 Emission is critical as the first thing I have to do upon installation is pass local emissions test. Auto with EGR is must First I heard about helicoil for starter mount bolt hole.

GeneralZinn
hey guys so as of this moment ive ben making progress i decided to go with the 2.5 figured i keep it stock i got the engine off ebay payed 1099.99 and free shipping so hope all works great price in my opinion well i have the engine wraped up in plastic and covered with a tarp till i can get out there and check it out its dark here so so dont wana go messing with it rite now but i really want to lol new radiator came in also im gonna ask for a lil help on some things when i pulled the engine origionally i noticed there were no wires connected to the terminals on the bat if anyone could help with what exactly goes to the bat and where they end up on the engine and so forth would be nice :0 ima get some piks up soon hope its looking good
86BRATMAN
Take the time to replace the timing belt and idlers, and being an ej25d I'd do the head gaskets while I could do them easily. After all you're putting another head gasket monster back where one came from.
idosubaru
definitely timing belts. rock auto and amazon has gates kits with all new tensioner/idlers for $120-$130. interference engine, if the belt breaks you'll have bent vales and need another engine or head rebuild. Sturgeon88
OK this is the thread I want to be on. I own a 1996 Outback Legacy and am looking at doing an engine swap with a 1998 Outback Legacy. The 96 is a manual and to the best of my knowledge it is a 2.2 SOHC. The 98 is also a manual and has the 2.5. From what I gathered from grossgary has said is that this is entirely within the realm of possibility? If so what potential problems am I looking at? idosubaru
If so what potential problems am I looking at? i got your PM. i'll reply here - next time post a link in the PM's as i can't generally get into PM's with everyone that has a question. 96 Outback manuals all came with 2.2's so it should be as you said. It's very easy and plug and play. Keep your grubby hands off the ECU and sensors, there's no need to touch any electrical stuff at all - plug and play. Remove the 2.5 and install the 2.2. Done. What you will have to do is: 1. swap the 1996 exhaust manifold onto the 1998 EJ25 vehicle. Very easy since you have to remove it from the engine anyway - just swap it over, it bolts right up. 96 EJ22 is single port exhaust, the 98 2.5 is dual port, but otherwise they bolt up just the same. Here's the one big question: 2. does the 96 have EGR? does the 98 have EGR? (big valve on the direvers side rear of intake manifold). it doesn't matter except for the check engine light and emissions if you have them in your state. the car runs and drives fine regardless of the EGR and matching. you can swap EGR into non-EGR and the other way around all day long, but you'll get a check engine light. there are work arounds depending what you have. i'll wait to hear what you got, but in general: non-EGR into EGR is the trickiest to work around. an EGR into a non-EGR - just don't use the EGR stuff or block it off. idosubaru
i can't follow along here, look at your post, it's unreadable the text and which photos are which. in general - those are both DOHC EJ25's and interchangeable. plug and play, bolt them right up. the bellhousing differences are no big deal. one is probably 8 bolt and one is 4 bolt, their still interchangeable. it appears that you have one EGR engine and one non-EGR engine. that poses some problems if you're installing a non-EGR engine into an EGR equipped vehicle. that is NOT an EJ22 engine and could not have come out of a 1996 Outback with manual transmission (unless it was previously swapped). so we'll need some better picture labeling and text to see what's going on. is that a JDM engine, where did it come from...etc? probably: 1. look up the thread in the USRM about working around the EGR issue. I think you can install the EGR intake on the non-EGR engine and just figgle with some vaccum tubes. 2. or you can install the non-EGR engine into an EGR vehicle and just ignore the check engine light if you don't have to worry about emissions. do you? 3. or....i'll have to wait to see what these engines really are to know what we're getting into.
