plastickmat
Hey guys have a really good deal (400$) for an EZ30 (D I believe its from a 2001 Outback) and would like to swap it into my forester, I'm quite knowledgeable of my forester's wiring as i've had to swap my 2.5 last year and also had transmission issues and cruise control issues that had me looking all over the place to solve so I'm confortable with how the car works Any tips? How hard is it to rewire the EZ30 to my car? Any solid members here have some info they could lend me a hand with? Do I need to upgrade my fuel pump or can my stock EJ25 pump do the trick? I know the engine is s'posed to bolt onto my EJ 5 speed transmission correctly so I am not worried about that part. Are these engines known to fail on specific areas I could assess before dropping her in? Thanks a lot fellers!
idosubaru
Do you have the complete engine and body side wiring harness? Get the FSM's and start stripping the wiring harness. great engines, don't generally need too much. replace the valve cover gaskets, spark plug tube gaskets, and spark plugs while it's out. they're quite tricky to do in the vehicle. use Subaru OEM NGK plugs, they are expensive but very good and you won't ever have to replace them again unless you drive 160,000+ km's. replace the two idler pulley bearings for the serpentine belt. they fail at an extremely high rate for some reason, i consider them normal maintenance and should be checked every 30k-60k. they're super easy and cheap, you can: 1. replace just the bearings - a basic 6203 bearing - they tap in and out *really* easy 2. DAYCO 89007 pulleys can be used in their place 3. Subaru is quite expensive for the pulleys. oil cooler gaskets leak all the time and at that age i'd replace it and any bad hoses associated with it while the engine doesn't have coolant in it. if the coolant pipe under the drivers side head is rusty - don't leave it there, it's cumbersome to get to in the vehicle. they're $50-$60 from Subaru. plastickmat
I don't have the wiring harness diagrams yet, and sort of apprehend the wiring as I have no idea where to start... For the pulleys you are giving me the choice of changing JUST the bearing OR Pulley with bearing or are you saying I should change both individually sorry if this is confusing? Thanks
Fairtax4me
New 6203 bearings at napa are like $5. Knock the old bearing out of the pulley, tap the new one in with a large socket. You'll need the whole engine and ECU harness for the 6. Not enough fuel injector wires in a 4 cyl harness to modify it to work. After that just sort out power and ground wires and a few others like speed input, ignition switch input, MT/AT identification. Should be pretty straight-forward once you get ECU I/O pinouts and compare them.
rxleone
Isn't there some sort of issue with mating the EZ30 to a manual transmission?

plastickmat
So do I really need to rip the dash out ? I have trouble understanding what happens to my stock fusebox, stock OBD port and etc.? What about the connections for the current engine on the passenger's side? DO they get cut out? Can I just splice into all the current igntion wires and what not and just unplug the stock ECU and it works? THanks
CNY_Dave
Does the 4cyl radiator have 2 top hose connections? Is the 4cyl radiator big enough for the H6?
rxleone
Would like more detail on that!! I'm not sure on the details, so take this with a grain of salt, but I've heard the USDM EZ30s need the automatic transmission computer linked or they throw about three codes. There is a JDM spec EZ30 6MT Legacy, so there must be a factory workaround somewhere. Sorry, that's all the information I have
