1984 subaru brat project($200 score)

Found this on craigslist on January 4 which was a friday while surfing all forsale/wanted and  saw a estate sale add so clicked on it which stated he had a brat for $200 with no other information. This just made me have to call him to find out more about. He said it was 84 in rough shape and it was going to be his rig to run on his property until his nephew  hit a tree. I asked him if it had a good tail gate that wasn't rusted or beat which he replied its in good shape but its covered in bumper stickers. I told him to hold it for me and i would come out the next day from Sandy all the way on the other side of Mt. Hood to tow dolly it home From Bend (about 240 miles round trip). When we left the passes where a little slick around 6 in the morning going over hood but was worth it. Even got it running the next day with a battery, new oil, new body ground wire, and starting fluid :headbang:. Its last titled in Idaho which is where the guy i bought it from got it from his Vietnam war veteran cousin who did lots of interesting things to it like plywood trim. To kick it off this thing was driven from Idaho to bend 350 miles with with out plates  and handkerchiefs for tail lights :grin:

That is a sweet score!

 

Is that some kind of factory DIN stereo adapter or just a clean aftermarket install?

 

Either way I'd be interested if you wanted to sell the radio console.

Its just a clean aftermarket install, the console came out of 86 parts brat i got and i put it in this to make it look a little better in the cab since the radio was hung up by wire. I don't want to sell it because i'm going to get this back on the road eventually but i bet the blue spacer came out of a car or truck that is factory for mounting the radio because the brat also had seats that were out of a mazda coupe. If i find anything out i will let you know since a lot of people would use the mod too including me.

Interesting, well if you have any other blue navy radio consoles in good shape I'd be interested in that too.

Yesterday i took out most of the bottom interior and threw away the 6 pieces of carpet held on by self drilling screws along with bad plastic pieces. I also finally replaced the speedo cable with a spare but when i stared driving it in 1st gear the speedometer turned all the way over past 85mph then when i stopped it went back to zero. After all of this there was a short that makes all the gauges go to max and the headlights flash on and off  at night when i needed them plus the 4 way flashers turn on and off when their not on. Today i decided to work on the electrical problems so i took out a bunch of the hack job wiring. The cigarette lighter, fuel pump, cooling fans, and radio all were hooked up to the  battery direct. I just took out all the hack wiring  besides the the fuel pump wiring in the cab because i rerouted it so its a lot less noticeable. Other than that i rewired the radio to the battery and the blue ignition wire so it turns on to the key at acc. The fuel pump and radio wiring both were routed to the right side top of the engine bay so they came out of the cab at the rubber cover just after the cowl. This was done with inline fuses at the battery, butt connectors covered with heat shrink, and final product wrapped in electrical tape. The inline fuses were connected to the + going to the fuse link box from battery making 4 wires go together with butt connector and heat shrink which looks a heck of a lot better than what was there.

Sadly this little guy threw a rod through the block :( so parked inside for now, but i plan on putting in another good block with rebuilt heads plus a full reseal. I'm still planning on repairing most the body and getting road legal again but its going to take awhile since i need to fix/sell my turbo wagon project which is really close to being done so i have some cash to put in more of my rigs.

Can you please explain the shifter mod?

It makes it so you can find a gear easier while shifting instead of having a foot of slop when in 1st and attempt to find 2nd without grinding. You punch out 2 pins on the linkage to take it off the transmission once you have all the interior out for the shifter off and the shifting rod out. Then you can punch out the bushing and take the plastic out if its bad or leave it if its good and not rounded. If you replace the plastic you can use whatever you want its just a bushing all it needs to do is fit properly(plastic, rubber, aluminum, brass, ect). Once thats done drill out the linkage and the rod on the transmission with a drill bit and find the proper bolt and nut to hold it on so there is no slop and put it back together.

 

For $200, thats a sweet deal. Where did you get it from?

I got it in Bend Oregon but it's originally from Idaho.

Thanks for clearing that up. It is leaking quiete a bit of oil though.

The transmission might need taken apart and some bonding rtv if the case is leaking, or if the tail is leaking i think there is a gasket, and if its leaking out the bottom where the transmission and motor meet its most likely the main seal on the motor. If it's the oil pan gasket on the motor just use rtv and clean up the sealing surfaces with a degreaser and forget the gasket.

She runs and drives now as of yesterday :) . Got her running on thursday but idle at 4-5k :wacko:. After some throttle adjustments and float level adjustment idles at about 1300. Running good enough for me to run her out of hiding and steam clean the engine and bay (don't worry i had a plastic bag covering the carb with zip ties so no water got in). Just a short run since no radiator for the time being since there is no where to put one.

 

Modified linkage, cable, and holder for the weber dfav. Which works great since you don't have to worry about the choke being in the way of the distributor cap like on my hatchback.
