any reason not to replace Hex bolts in timing chain cover with regular bolts?

H6 3.0 engine has 60ish hex bolts for the timing chain cover.  i am destroying almost all of them via chisel to get them loose.

 

unless there's some compelling reason not too i'm going to replace them with normal bolts like transmissions/oil pan bolts.

Nothing exotic about a timing chain cover. Yea, I would use normal bolts. Recommend applying anti seize to the threads, just in case you ever have to remove the bolts in the future. Anti seize can sure make life a lot easier. I even use it on my lug nuts for the road wheels.

You can replace them with traditional bolts, so long as you have clearance to extract with a socket or wrench. Anti-seize like stated above will help keep the bolts from freezing and help prevent future breaking or snapping. Just need a dab on the threads (don't over do it).

The only reason not to would be if there is limited clearance around the head of the bolt that prevents you from putting a socket on it.

 

That size bolt should typically have a 10mm head. See if you can order a flange head bolt with an 8mm head for any bolts where there is a lack of side clearance.
