Vacuumhosectomy

Recommended Posts

I have an '69 GL wagon, 4wd with 275,000 on it. Finally started yanking on vacuum hoses today. What a difference in how it runs, wished I had done it earlier.

What are the 2 big hoses on each side that have exhaust running through them? One is attached to a plastic box and the other to what looks like an overgrown fuel filter. A little exhaust comes out them and you can hear it as well. THought it kinda odd having exhaust running through a large vacuum hose.

Glad I found this place....a wealth of knowledge.

From what I gather they are for the Air Suction Valves (ASV). Does one end of each connect to the air cleaner and the other to what look like a metal valves? The ASV is used to add oxygen to the exhaust stream before the Cat so that the Cat can work more efficiently. Do a search for ASV to learn more.

The ASV system does not rob any power, and only serves to help your emmissions. You can block it off if you want to, but there's no need. It's not dumping exhaust into your air cleaner unless it's malfunctioning. It's actually sucking air into your exhaust. And yes, it's supposed to make that loud noise - that's what the big plastic things are there to muffle.
