gutterworks
My name is Ron. I have an 85 GL Hatchback. I love it to death. But, don't want it to die.I really need someones help figuring out my iratique idle and bucking in low gear, low idle. I don't know if it is vacuum, timing, exhaust, fuel, carb. I have been all threw them in one one way or another. Now my exhaust sounds worst. If you are a Subaru person. You are my kind of people. If your a HAWKS fan, even better people. I'll drive as far as Seattle or Kelso. (360) 970-3080
Subruise
did you use dealer intake gaskets and replace anything or rebuild the carb? i just got a hatchy as well and am dealing with a fuel issue at the moment..sat for a couple years. bucking and crappy idle sounds like carb base gasket to me. that one kid
um I'm not really good with the mechanics and finding problems but i had a similar problem with my brat when i bought it. It would idle kinda weak and when i would press on the gas the revs would drop to zero and usually die unless i gave it a ridiculously high amount of gas and revved it to about 5 or 6000 rpm. When i actually got the thing on the road and moving it would jult and shake as if it wasn't getting enough fuel or maybe air...(engine seemed starved) anyway i took it to a shop and found out that all the carb seals had been pretty much dissolved by the low grade fuel the previous owner had put in it. the carb has been rebuilt and i now run it only on high grade or premium fuel and runs amazingly...... just my tiny bit of knowledge hope it helps

As a mater of fact I did have the carb off. I was going to rebuild it. I bought the kit and everything. Got it off, and chickened out. The kit only gave me one base gasket. I needed one more for the other side of the rizer thing. Didn,t have one so a buddy said, He makes gaskets all the time. So he made one out of cardboard. Still the same results. It's not noticable if I am cruzen along. Even at a stop light, the idle only surges a little bit. But, if I want to put threw the development. I have to clutch and go or I look like I'm just learning to drive a clutch. This whole epasode began coming home from Bainbridge Island. About Bremerton I seemed as if I had cruze controle. I pressed in the clutch, and she almost red lined on me. I'm thinking wtf. So I start punching it hoping the throdle would unstick. Nothing. Here I am heading for a what, 35 mile hour zone? So I get off at an exit.Shut er down as I come to a red light. On green, start er up, and, wholy spoob, pop the clutch cuz she is gonna blow up. Get to the gas station. Raise the hood. Take of the air cleener. Look at everything. Cant figure it out. Throdle cable moves freely. Fire it up, same thing. Then I find a chunk of black melted plastic wedged in my carb. Turns out the emisions piece of spoob thing down on the side of the exhaust manifold had a meltdown. The melted crap went up and came out right into my carb. And stuck there. Without that fat hose on with that space ship looking melted piece on there. I sounded like hell. But, I could make it home. Ifter that, Hozes were coming off. And stuff got plugged up.
