Found an old Weber at the PAP

Recommended Posts

Found this old guy at the pick n pull here in Portland.   It was off an Isuzu Pup and had a fairly tall adapter plate.  I have a Hitachi at the moment that has a slight stutter which I can't pick out at this point.  I've used a propane torch to see if any of the vacuum lines are leaking to no avail...  I'm guessing it's probably one of the gaskets so I'm pretty stoked on switching it out with this weber I found.  It looks like a 32/36 DGEV from what I can tell...  The linkage is a little different, but it's also many years older than any other weber I've seen in the past.  I'm pulling the choke and throttle from the hitachi when I finally do the conversion.  I'm gonna order a rebuild kit with some other parts as well.  Does anyone fabricate an adapter plate for an ae81 on the board?  I thought I saw one at one point but wasn't sure if that was on USMB.  Anyways, here's some shots of the carb:

I'll post updates and questions throughout the process in hopes it might help someone else.  Between GeneralDisorder, Loyale 2.7 Turbo, and Kanurys there is a wealth of information for anyone attempting this.  Be sure you search through their threads for any vacuum hose or PCV troubles you might have.  Hopefully the rebuild goes well and I can help someone out in the future.  This message board is the best by the way.  I've never had to post in the past because usually the info is right there waiting for you.  Thanks everyone!

I don't think that's a 32/36. Looks like both barrels are the same size to me, does not look like a progressive linkage, either -both open simultaneously. Are there any numbers stamped or cast on it? My guess is it's a 38 DGES (synchro).

Oh ya, I didn't think to look for a stamp.  Its actually a 38 DGAS synchronous...  Strange how every carb I see online is a 38 DGES, and not a 38 DGAS.  Not sure of the difference there.  Difference is electric choke and aqua choke although this one seems to have been converted at some point.  Does anyone have any experience with gas mileage on these?  I'd much rather have a progressive carb for that reason.  I don't necessarily need a race car here, and the engine would require some mods to be able to handle this thing.  I'll probably end up selling it on craigslist unless someone from the board wants.  It will obviously need to be rebuilt as you can see from the shots.  If anyone is interested in buying it send me a PM and I can throw it in a flat rate box or meet up, I'm located in Portland, OR.
