Rear Tranmission seal nightmare or?

Recommended Posts

I blew the rear seal on my lady's 95 Subaru Legacy simple enough?   Not so, upon removing exhaust & heat shield discover u-joint is shot...ok got to replace whole half shaft there fair enough.   Now for the kicker once I remove the half shaft i expected to see a very worn rear seal but I don't I see broken pieces of what the seal sits in....oh grief.

Question is that broken piece replaceable ie part of a tail shaft all be it only 3-4 inches or is it part of the casing?

Yeah the tail housing is easily replaceable. Find a junkyard that lets you pull parts. Get the tail housing and the driveshaft.

The locked up u-joint is probably what caused yours to explode.

The u-joints can be replaced though. Just have to chisel or drill out the staking that hold the bearing caps in.

The U-joint is really trashed I'm amazed  didn't hear it or feel it...think that it's going to be a pick-a-part thing along with the tail housing. Man when it rains it pours both of my trucks are down too, I just pulled a 727 torqeflight out of one truck and it sits disassembled.  And my 1 ton Cummins is down due to injector pump..that's pricey.  Oh well.

So when I pull the tail housing off is anything going to fling out at me? First time for me digging into anything Subaru.

When I pulled the tail housing a spring came out I don't know how it's configured when in place since I wasn't aware of it till the tail shaft was out and in my hands.  I have a picture of it in my email how do I post the pic to get a little guidance?

http://opposedforces.com/parts/legacy/us_b11/type_26/automatic_transmission/at_transfer_and_extension/illustration_1/ this is the tail shaft I'm dealing with, got it here in front of me,  Don't see this spring in the diagram.

was fairly confident of this procedure till this spring appeared.

that spring is for the park ''pawl'', the hook that locks the trans when you put it in park.

look for some pics to see how it fits.

it is not complicated,

but if you do not know how it goes,

you can't put it back.

that make sense,,,,,,been unable to locate pictorial of my particular situation so I got under the vehicle and just kind of winged it.  I'll try to post a pic of what i did so you'all can congratulate or ridicule don't matter to me either way as long has it works.

Btw since it is the parking pawl that means it won't engage in park or start huh?
