subiphoenix89
What years ej22 engines are non interference. I normally change the belt and other parts while in there. I'm looking to buy another subi but want a non interference one in case budget doesn't allow for immediate replacement of belt and other timing components. Thank ahead of time for any input. If this has already been covered please include link or at least tell me so I can search for it on my own thank you.
heartless
1996 was the last year of the non-interference 2.2 - and yes, it has been covered, many times.

upnorthguy
People frequently swap a '95 or '96 2.2 into a '97 or '98 Outback wagon (as those often have head gasket problems with the factory 2.5). I've seen some great deals on Craigslist by people looking to unload a wagon with a bad 2.5 that would make a good 2.2 swap candidate. (There are numerous threads on here about 2.2 swaps)
idosubaru
1990-1996 EJ22's are non-interference. there is one report of what is supposed to be an original 1996 EJ22 with valve damage on subaruoutback.org, suggesting maybe some late 96's are interference. whether that's entirely true or not may be suspect and if it is possible, would be rare. all Ej18's are also non-interference if you venture into any imprezas. all Ej25's are interference. subiphoenix89
I'm planning on getting an impreza wagon and doing 2.2 swap. I have a 93 subi legacy wagon and love it I wanted the non interference cuz I let someone else touch my car and they reused the tensioner and didn't do it correctly and it broke throwing my timing. Luckily the non interference engine aloud for me to just redo the timimg.
Rooster2
As reported 2.2 engines from 1990-96, are non interference. Depending on what year Subie you want to drop a motor in, you will want to qualify, so you match up ECMs, and OBD1 or OBD2 engine management systems with a donor motor. That way the replacement motor will be plug and play to your car. Edited March 27, 2014 by Rooster2
