swapping loyale GL headlamps into 3rd gen DL (4 lamp to 2 lamp swap), parts list?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, looking to axe my 4 lamp setup on the 88 DL 3 door.  I know I've read somewhere on the forum here that its possible to install the 2 lamp setup (H4?) from the Loyale, and I've seen photos of 3rd gen 3 door coupe/4 door sedans that have them.  What I need though is a parts list.  Planning to pick everything up to get this done since I don't like the 4 lamp setup (and even with my discount the E codes are $$$), just not sure what is needed outside of the lights and the new plugs to splice in.

Are the marker lights the same between the 4 lamp setup and the 2 lamp setup?  Are the rad grills the same?  What other parts do I need from the donor car to make this happen?

I'd happily donate the entire assembly off my car if i could have yours. Let me know next time you find yourself by jersey ;)

Eww, Jersey LOL, I hate going into Jersey...Then again, its still better than Reading PA, so I guess I can't complain :D

I'd gladly trade ya, but would need a parts list to know what to pull from my car and send ya  I've got another deal in the works now to buy a set of housings, but no marker lights to pair with it.  However I could probably use a second set if you want to send me your setup in exchange for mine (just in case I decide to get crafty or break something during install) ;)  I'll cover shipping on my end if you cover it on yours  Shoot me a PM and lets put some sort of idea together :)

Pretty simple really......Not a hard swap at all.  You need the Headlamps, the mounting/adjuster bracket they are in, and the corner markers.....since the DL ones won't fit.

FWIW......you are downgrading....the DL setup offers more light, and the easy ability to replace scratched, chipped, or broken lenses.

By contrast ......the GL lights are notoriously weak to begin with......and most of them are scratched, chipped, fill with water or worst of all the reflective coating inside rusts and stops reflecting.

I too would happily trade you for your DL setup.

My plans with these dont stop at just installing the housings ;)  And it doesn't involve the cheap aftermarket HID kits.  I will be upgrading the alternator and installing a custom relay'd harness to operate higher watt bulbs.

The main reason for this is I hate the look of the 4 lamp setup, and I despise sealed beam lamps.  Couple that with the fact that I'm too cheap to install 4 Hella 165mm lamps (even with my shop discount), and ya have a recipe for a project lol.  I like the look of the 2 lamp setup better, looks more modern, and I think it flows better with the body lines of the car (flush with the hood/bumper instead of recessed like the 4 lamp..looks too much like a bastardized 80s honda ;))

I'm also planning to supplement these lamps with Hella Micro DE fogs and driving lamps run off of the same relay'd harness, so even with the "downgrade" to Osram Hyper 85w/80w bulbs in these housings, I'll still get much better light than the sealed beams.  At the very least the cutoff will be much better.

This may be put on hold though...good chance I might be picking up an almost pristine 86 GL 4wd wagon for next to nothing if all goes accordingly ;)

Yeah.......Still doesn't help the lense chip water in housing rusted reflector issue.  But I get were your coming from.....sorta......

I personally think the coolness of these cars is that they are 80's......neither GLs nor DLs really look "modern". For that reason I like the DL's "Old School" look espescialy when coupled with the ease of service and low cost bright light.
