The click could be simply because of worn copper contacts in the starter's solenoid, a fairly common problem on older Subarus.  It's a cheap and fairly easy fix.

 

If the timing belt is okay check to make sure the timing marks on the cams still line up properly.

can you rotate the engine manually? (21mm socket on the crank bolt, turn clockwise) if yes, then I would agree with Olnick - bad starter contacts and/or bad connections.

 

also make sure battery is fully charged...

22mm socket.

 

Weak ig. switch.

 

Add a relay to starting system......or pushbtton.......or both.

Also I'm only wanting to get this car running so that I know the engine is good so I can then rip it out and cram it into my brat, is there a way to bypass the starter just to get the engine running?

If stick shift, push to 5 mph, then pop the clutch to start, without using the stater.

 

If automatic tranny, then can only start with a starter.
