I am about to pull the Ej22 out of my '92 legacy wagon and give it the new timing belt, water pump and cam seals et al. I am looking for two things:

1. a good set of step-by-step instrutions for this process.

2. advice on other things to check/replace while I have it out of the car.

Thanks in advance

if you are pulling the motor (not a necessary step for a timing job, but does give easier access) then reseal the rear oil separator plate (use an anarobic sealant or ultra grey), and replace the o-rings on the rear cam seals as well. 92 should have the cast alloy plate, but if it is plastic then you will want to replace it with a stamped steel one, which will also require new screws.

unless it is obviously leaking really badly, leave the rear main seal alone.

for instructions try this: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/74256-ej22-timing-belt-change/

alternatively, a video by our own Miles Fox:
