pa_trick
My 92 Legacy occasionally has a starting issue. You put the key in the ignition and turn it to start and you get a single click, but no starter. if you turn it to the start position repeatedly, quickly eventually it will start. It will go through periods of no problems then it will act-up again. From the sound that it is making I think that there is an issue with the solenoid. Either it is not getting enough Voltage to close the circuit or it just is not making contact. So two questions: 1. Since a lot of cars have both a remote switching solenoid and a solenoid on the starter, Does this have one or more solenoids? 2. Where will I find it/them? Thanks in advance for you help
Fairtax4me
Search for starter contact replacement or something like that. There is a set of copper contacts in the solenoid that wear out and cause this problem. Easy to replace and only cost about $15-$20 for a whole kit. Gloyale
Starter contacts help.....sometimes..........but what's really going on is the ignition switch is getting weak. Adding a relay at the starter is the way to deal with this. Fused power tapped of the Pos cable.....triggered by the original starter wire. mwbean
would'nt just replacing the ingnition switch be easier?
Gloyale
would'nt just replacing the ingnition switch be easier? Expensive for new. Used one will fail again later. In the late 90's and early 2000's ......it was 80's subarus having this failure. Now it's 90's ones having the problem. Makes sense.....since the ignition switches havent' changed at all really........time/miles/# of times operated........they fail. Replacing it means disasembly of a large portion of the steering column......... By contrast.....adding a relay can be done in 10 mins......by simply opening the hood......and maybe taking off the intake boot. You can prewire it with a Eyelet and fuse to attach to the large post on the starter.....an eyelet to ground to the 10mm bolt near the transistor.......a female spade to connect to the starter solenoid......and a male spade to plug into the OE starter wire.........
