Subaruist
I have an opportunity to possibly strip whatever I want from a 1985 2WD Subaru GL. Some few things will fit, obviously, but I am wondering what all might bolt-up that I might not consider. Aside from engine, wheels, etc. what can cross over? I need a Carb and seats really bad, so I hope those will fit. but what about any of the interior, like the carpet, door panels, etc.? I would guess that some of the other items under the hood might work, such as alternator, fuel pump (Yes, I know some subarus have that tucked back by the rear wheels), waterpump? I presume that the dash will not work at all, either for fit or for electrical hook-ups, although I would love to if I could. I also presume that the front end parts, such as the grill, headlights, etc will also not fit/bolt-up. - am I wrong??? I will have to know by this coming Wednesday, the 23rd, as that is when I will be able to do the stripping, so I may post this in more than one forum, because I really need to know, and I really need to know now. Thanks.
Gloyale
2wd rear brake shoes and cylinders, backing plate.....will be the same. Not much else. Carb can bolt on but will be different.....need whole intake manifold to do it. Seats are 1-1/16" inch wider between the rails.......a few pieces of steel with hole can adapt that. not much else really. Fuel pump will work.....Alt....I don't think so......too small but not sure. Oh no! You sound like you know exactly what you are talking about, but it surely cannot be true! What about the intake manifold AND carb? Will the manifold bolt on? If I remember, this model (85 GL 2WD) would still have the 1st/2nd Gen type motor, (without timing chain). The only real difference would be whether the engine is a 1600 or an 1800, - right? I am confused, maybe a typo? you state: "Seats are 1 -/16" inch wider between the rails" - was that supposed to be 1/16" or 1 1/16" ??? A 16th" could be taken care of with a little drill routing. turbosubarubrat
Need a pic of what your taking parts off of because it could be either a 2nd or 3rd gen which is a huge difference.
Subaruist
Need a pic of what your taking parts off of because it could be either a 2nd or 3rd gen which is a huge difference. There are actually 3 generations of the old stlye Subarus - the 78-81/82 original (brats, for instance), then there are the 1983/84 style 2nd gen, and then there are the last of that style, 1984-1986 I think, where they have the dual square headlights behind plastic lens. After that came the boxy ones like legacy, etc. As far as I can figure, not having a picture, this would be that 2nd&1/2 gen with the dual square headlights in plastic lens/cover/housing/etc . - most likely like the one pictured in your link: 1986 hatchback http://www.ultimates...door-hatctback/ Edited April 21, 2014 by Subaruist
turbosubarubrat
If its a 2 door hatchback like mine the doors fit you just swap glass to brat glass, all interior from doors forward is the same, all the body is the same from doors up besides bumper which mounts different on 2wd models, motor will be the same, fuel pump will be the same just mounted in a different spot than a brat. Gen 1 came as Brat(truck), coupe, sedan, and wagon all in 4wd and 2wd also gl/dl. They came with a ea71 1.6l except for in 81 some first gen brats came with a 2nd gen drive train a ea81 with dual range 4wd transmission. 2nd gens came as brats(81-87), wagons(80-84), sedans(80-84), coupes(80-84), and hatchbacks(80-88). They came with ea71 in early production then came with the ea81 1.8l motor. In 83-84 they had the turbo model introduced the ea81t with had 5 different transmissions 4 speed manual with dual range 4wd, then 4 speed with single range 4wd, 3 speed auto 4wd, 3 speed 2wd, and 5 manual speed 2wd . 3rd gens came with a ea82 or ea82t 1.8l motors. If i got this all right they had 9 or 10 different transmissions a manual 5 speed dual range 4wd, 5 speed single range push button 4wd, 5 speed 2wd, 5 speed dual range awd, 5 speed single range awd, 3/maybe 4 speed auto awd single range, 3 speed 4wd, 4 speed 4wd, 4 speed 2wd. The only real difference would be whether the engine is a 1600 or an 1800, - right? Nah.....sorry.......85 is a 3rd gen.......EA82 engine with 2 timing belts. I am confused, maybe a typo? you state: "Seats are 1 -/16" inch wider between the rails" - was that supposed to be 1/16" or 1 1/16" ??? A 16th" could be taken care of with a little drill routing. 1-1/16" As in 17/16ths........just a hair over 1 inch... Bolt the inner rail to the seat... use 2 strips of flat metal with holes 1-1/16th apart to mount the outer rail closer in towards the middle of the seat........the rails should land right on the OE holes this way.
