Great White Buffalo
Ok, so here's the plan. I'm thinking of installing a K&N oil filter and air filter, and performance spark plugs/plug wires/ignition coil. The purpose behind it (in theory) is that I'll have less time in the ignition process which will save me on fuel and also give me a slight boost in acceleration. If any of this seems off or I'm flat out wrong, please let me know. Input is welcome here. Also, where can I find a new actuator for my wagon? 1992 Subaru Loyale Wagon, 5spd, 4x4
Discombobulated
This is all my opinion so do what you want with it. 1) Performance wires, the stock wires are plenty good for a nice running stock motor and I have never seen any improvements over stock. Spend the money on a nice set from the dealer. They will fit perfect and the set I bought was 35 bucks. 2) Performance coil, don't need it the hitachi coil is plenty and is literally bulletproof, search about it on these boards, plenty of threads on coils causing issues with other components and failing. 3) Performance plugs, just stick with a nice stock plug, these motors love NGK and when i first got my car it had some weird platinum gold covered neon silver tipped ion fire Electra charged crap and it ran better with some nice stockers:) 4) Performance air filter, had one in my blazer and hated it, had to clean it and oil it and it caked my maf with an oily residue I had to clean once and I dumped it and went back to a stocker and it was exactly the same. Once again this is my opinion and these cars were designed to run at an optimum level and they will run that way if you just take care of it and give it what it had not what it doesn't need:) Oh what kind of actuator are you talking?? suprjohn
I'm with Discombobulated on this one. I've tried "high perf" ignition parts, and haven't really noticed any significant difference over stock, other than that my wallet was lighter. I also tried the K&N filter and didn't notice any difference, except my wallet being a LOT lighter. I'm running NGK's midrange (price wise) plugs in my '89 DL wagon, and it seems to like them fine. I'm not a fan of champion plugs on the other hand. John
SmashedGlass
The best "performance" mod for these cars is proper maintenance, with the proper OEM parts whenever possible. I wouldn't sink my money into any more expensive a/m products that purport to raise power.

MilesFox
I would only consider ignition upgrades if you are running some sort of high compression or e85 setup with advanced timing and wide spark gap, along with icam and exhaust mods, otherwise, there is nothing to gain beyond stock components other than reliability issues. But good quality parts is a step up, such ans using NGK bran plugs and wires instead of some autolite or champion, and with the oil, you can consider different weights in full synthetic, such as 5w30, 10w30, 0w30, or straight sae30. The 5w and 0w can gain you fuel economy points, but the 10w will offer better protection at sustained highway speeds. The subaru engine can take anything from these weights, along with 10w40, 20w40, 15w40 and 20w50, depending on the application The &n oil filter is nothing to marvel at, more brandig than engineering. Stick to a good quality WIX or napa gold series, mobil 1, or bosch filter, and for the air filter, stay with a paper filter for hotwire MAF reliability. rdweninger
White Buffalo, sounds like you want to spend some money. So go buy some BPR6ES NGK plugs and a good quality multimeter to check the resistance in your plug wires. Change your oil and filter, often. Change the transmission fluid, front diff fluid and rear diff fluid. Never hurts to keep fresh brake fluid in your lines... that crap likes to attract water... and water leads to oxidation... and oxidation leads to rust... and rust... well, you get the idea. Leave all the other stuff on the shelf for the next guy.
Great White Buffalo
Okay, so Subis like OEM parts, proper care, and the good ole KISS method (Keep It Simple Stupid)...sound about right? I honestly wasn't looking to spend much money. I just thought the performance wires would speed up ignition and save fuel. Seemed to work on my ramcharger when I had it...and yes, I know, Subarus are a different beast. I'm still learning. Thanks for the helps gents. Y'all are great. (G.W.) ferp420
multi spark ignition like a msd box or a procomp or somthin lile that it helps alot at lower rpms and i have noticed up to 10mph differance pulling big hills ive tested it a few times with the box hooked up and with out it also picked up a few mpgs aswell i picked up my procomp al6 for $100 brand new open box worth every penny
Gloyale
K+N filters.....even properly oiled......will let far more and larger particles through......they are engine killers. Never run K+N air filters. They are junk.........false sense of "upgrade" is all you get from them.
MR_Loyale
As others have suggested, use the oem quality parts and "upgrade" your savings account balance instead. Or have a USMB party and buy us all a beer.

djellum
I would definatly take a look at your ignition system to make sure its up to par, but as said above unless you have a specific build or reason to need the higher output then it won't make much of a difference over other parts. I think a lot of times people replace old worn out equipment with new fancy stuff stuff and think its making more power when either part would work as good if it were new. I do suggest buying a quality set of plug wires. I have seen so many lately that just fall apart or need to be re-crimped. If you do buy a new coil, stocker or a blaster, then make sure it can run in the direction it will be sitting. Some use an oil bath to cool and can't be mounted sideways. others use different methods to cool and can be mounted in any direction. Not going to die in a day or anything, but heat is bad mojo for electrical systems and a huge waste of energy. never been a fan of K&N. no evidence to anything, but cleaning and oiling was a pain and I have heard mixed reviews on how well they work. Ibreakstuff
Or you could go full retard.. buy forged internals, tons of rare NOS parts, reinvent the wheel, fabricate the unfabricatable, build the unbuildable, and obtain the unobtainium. And then sleep on the couch because you spent your gf's shoe money on car parts.. then your up at 2am on a work night browsing the interweb for more parts, wondering where your next car part fix will come from. But I wouldn't know anything about that. For simple tuneup go with NGK plugs and wires. And a quality/oem air/oil filter. The only spfi ea82 mods I recommend is the pcv mod so you don't blow oil when your doing doughnuts in the snow, but your car should already have it. Re K&N, if your goal is more maintenance and more dirt getting into your motor... they are great. I use Amsoil air filters, in all of my cars, they probably have the same flow as stock but I have noticed lest dirt film in my intakes and less soot on the maf after playing in the dirt. They can be blown out and reused, as long as the cellulose doesn't get ripped. Edited April 29, 2014 by Ibreakstuff
