grampahull Posted April 26, 2014 Share Posted April 26, 2014 I loaned my 99 soobie to a relative. auto trans, pristine. that person ran it out of coolant on the highway till the engine quit. then towed it 40 miles with wheels on ground. engine will crank but not start. gbhrps Posted April 26, 2014 Share Posted April 26, 2014 From what you describe the car may not be worth fixing, unless you have access to the parts cheaply and you can do the work yourself. Buying a used engine and tranny from a wrecker and then paying a mechanic to drop them in may prove to cost more than the car is worth. grampahull Posted April 26, 2014 Author Share Posted April 26, 2014 It had 10,000 on the belt and pump and 500 on the cam seals. i can do the work but hate to go thru or replace the engine unless i'm reasonably sure i have a tranny. i estimate the speed of tow at about 60. guess i'm just venting. thanks for the replys guys. like spaz says, don't ever loan em out. do whatever you have to to provide a ride. Gloyale Posted April 26, 2014 Share Posted April 26, 2014 If the trans is a manual it's fine to tow 4 wheels on the ground. Even an auto, if they didn't go fast would be fine.......maybe some wear on the transfer clutch but should be ok.........flat towing is better than 2 wheels on a dolly......that is the worst for subaru. I owned a Legacy automatic that had been flat towed behind a motor home most of it's life, for almost 200k miles. It ran great up to about 300k when the trans went out..... And really, You Can't really blame them (the borrower) for the initial loss of coolant...........Why did it lose coolant? Who worked on it last? Sounds like that's on you. Honestly I'd be WAAAAY more worried about an engine run without coolant til it wouldn't go than that trans. grampahull Posted April 27, 2014 Author Share Posted April 27, 2014 yup i have to take the responsibility on the coolant leak. engine's a 2.5 with new head gaskets a year ago it's a 99. re the 2.2...............is it really that plug and play? if i have to do any computer mods, that would be over my old head. havent had a chance yet to examine it to see what happened with the coolant. i doubt head gaskets....too sudden. thanks guys.
